Unpopular opinion: The career path for pre-sales professionals is terrible. Here is what people currently assume the path looks like: - Break into a pre-sales role - Get a few years of experience - Promoted to Senior - Promoted to Principal - Desperately try to break into Management - Come to the realization that managing people isn't for them I have (shocking) news for you...this is not the only way to grow in pre-sales!! You can take alternate paths, ones that interact with pre-sales every day. Think about it, you probably spend a ton of time with (Product + Content) Marketing, Product Managers, Channel Sales, Sales Enablement Teams, and Sales Operations. But there is no "direct" path into any of these roles from pre-sales, so how do we fix this? 🤔 Here is what I propose; it's time to structure pre-sales with a core set of skills and a learning path that includes the ability to specialize. We already see certifications that have different learning paths and the ability to specialize in certain areas. Why not apply the same to pre-sales career paths? Your ability to grow and pivot into additional roles would be based on your interests and skills sets...not just a "bump in title". Damian Tommasino is a font of great pre-sales content, followed him for a while. Thought this was a really interesting potential model for pre-sales professionals! I especially like the encouragement to specialize in something else that is an aspect of technical pre-sales *before* pushing leadership on someone who might not want/be well suited to take that on. Sales enablement is a great choice too, having worked with some phenomenal people in that role. #careerpath #technicalsales #presales
