Australian gold in the Olympic swimming pool, as always 🥇. So how come Australia 🦘 produces so many champion Olympic swimmers? ༄ Well, a lot has to do with Australia (and New Zealand) having the world's highest incidence of asthma, a chronic lung disease – around 10% of Aussies have it. Talk to many Aussies and they'll be able to name a huge list of people they know who have asthma. Someone having an asthma attack at school was almost a daily occurrence. And with so many people having asthma, it does mean that asthma awareness is also high. Swimming is regularly suggested as a great way to build lung capacity 🫁, so it's no surprise to find that many Olympic swimmers, and not just the Aussies, got into swimming as children as a therapy for their own asthma. 🏖️ Added to this is Australia's perfect climate for swimming, the abundance of swimming pools, whether it be in people's backyards or the many Olympic-sized ones in the suburbs, the fact that 90% of Australians live within easy reach of a beach, as well as the beach and pool culture to go with this, such as our world-famous surf lifesavers. 🏊 But while swimming and water safety are a mandatory part of the curriculum, and there's the long-standing tradition for Australian schools to hold an annual "swimming carnival" (a school-wide competitive swimming competition), at least 40% of Australian children leave primary school (at age 11/12) not being able to swim, so swimming is not a given for Aussies. 🩳 For more info about other Australian swimming terms such as Australian crawl, speedos and budgie smugglers, have a look here https://lnkd.in/eubr3qPx 👉 Are you a swimmer? Cold Weather Swimming - How to Stay Warm in Frigid Temps While most view winter as the off-season, open water swimming and polar plunges in cold temperatures are growing in popularity. The mental and physical challenge draws thrill seekers worldwide. If you’re considering cold weather swimming this season, here’s how to stay warm and safe: Acclimatize Slowly Prepare your body by gradually decreasing pool temp over time. Expose skin little by little. Protect Extremities Wear insulating caps, gloves, socks and booties to prevent excessive heat loss through head/hands/feet. Apply Vaseline Lubricate exposed skin with a layer of Vaseline to provide insulation from wind and chill. Choose a Wetsuit Wear an insulated triathlon or surfing wetsuit both for warmth and buoyancy. Prep With Warm Liquids Drink warm broth or tea before plunging to raise internal body temperature. Bring Dry Clothes Have warm layers, towels, jackets ready to put on immediately after exiting water. Swim Near Support Never swim alone. Have someone ready to assist you or call for help if needed. While exhilarating, cold water swimming requires extreme care. If you’re here, you’ve noticed that there are flags hanging over almost every public pool that you have been to. What’s the purpose of these flags, you ask? It’s not some lifesaving device like some people speculate, nor are they just for show. The flags hang over the pool to let competitive swimmers know exactly how far away they are from the end of the pool. Competitive swimming consists of four major strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Three of the four strokes are swum on your front…backstroke is not. When swimming backstroke, swimmers can’t just stop, turn to see how far away they are, then continue swimming! This doesn’t allow swimmers to finish their races fast. Instead, backstroke swimmers just swim until they see the flags, signaling they are close to the wall. After lots of practice, swimmers know that when they see the flags, they are a set amount of strokes away from the wall. This number of strokes is different for every swimmer based on their size and swimming ability. But, no matter where you are, those flags are always five meters away from the wall, allowing you to use the same number of strokes in any pool. For me, that count is three for slow speeds and two for fast speeds in races. Knowing your stroke count lets swimmers be able to finish their races fast and beat the swimmer next to them. Swimmers who are interested in learning their backstroke stroke count should try different amounts. Start in the middle of the pool and push off swimming backstroke until you see the flags. Start out with taking three strokes then hold that hand above your head and kick until your hand grabs the wall. If you had a lot of kicking, do it again, but this time take four strokes. Potencia en natación La potencia en natación se puede calcular de varias maneras, pero generalmente se evalúa midiendo el tiempo que toma a un nadador recorrer una distancia determinada. Se divide la distancia por el tiempo en segundos, luego se multiplica por la constante 3.5 y finalmente por el peso del nadador en kilogramos. La fórmula es: Potencia = (Distancia en metros) / (Tiempo en segundos) * 3.5 * (Peso del nadador en kg) Conocer la potencia en natación es beneficioso porque permite evaluar la eficiencia y el rendimiento del nadador. También ayuda a los entrenadores a diseñar programas específicos para mejorarla y a los nadadores a establecer metas realistas y medibles. Para mejorar la potencia en natación, es importante llevar a cabo entrenamientos específicos que se enfoquen en el desarrollo de la fuerza, la resistencia y la técnica. Algunos ejercicios y enfoques comunes incluyen: Entrenamiento de fuerza: Ejercicios fuera del agua, como levantamiento de pesas, entrenamiento con bandas elásticas o ejercicios de peso corporal, para fortalecer los músculos utilizados en la natación. Entrenamiento de resistencia: Sesiones de natación de larga distancia o intervalos cortos con descansos mínimos para mejorar la capacidad cardiovascular y la resistencia muscular. Trabajo de técnica: Ejercicios enfocados en mejorar la técnica de nado, incluyendo la posición corporal, la técnica de respiración, la entrada y salida de las manos en el agua, entre otros aspectos. La frecuencia de entrenamiento puede variar según el nivel de habilidad del nadador, pero generalmente se recomienda entrenar de 4 a 6 días a la semana para ver mejoras significativas en la potencia y el rendimiento. Las distancias y el tipo de entrenamiento también dependerán de los objetivos específicos del nadador y del programa de entrenamiento diseñado. Es esencial mantener un equilibrio entre el entrenamiento, el descanso y la recuperación para evitar lesiones y permitir que el cuerpo se adapte y mejore. Siempre es recomendable consultar con un entrenador o profesional de la natación para obtener un plan de entrenamiento personalizado y seguro. Los test o pruebas en nadadores fundamentalmente se realizan sobre el ritmo promedio en una prueba de 3000m (3000m para nadadores de elite implica una duración cercana a los 30′, para atletas de menor nivel las distancias recomendadas pueden ir de los 1500m a los 3000m, siendo 2000m una buena prueba para triatletas). Dos pruebas que se pueden realizar para estimar los tiempos es distancias de 200 m. y 500 m., o 100 m y 400 m. En nuestro ejemplo vamos a considerar que nuestro triatleta nada 200 m en 2´:26” y los 500 m en 6´:32”, su velocidad crítica estimada para un 100 m. seria 1´21”. There we some concerns of my visiting World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships 2023 in Netanya, Israel instead of two other major events in swimming world last week. The biggest was that the coaches were very busy and wouldn't have time and focus. Indeed they were busy, especially given the fact that they had to get on the team bus both after the morning and evening sessions. It proved to be the right choice for me to go there. 1. Talked to the coaches from over 15 countries. Very useful feedback. Even coaches who were not ready to buy yet, clearly explained well why they wouldn't do it. And promised to pass the word to the coaches who have larger freestyle teams and/or who liked SwimTech. 2. Several teams put me in touch with their Biomechanics person, one team right away offered to help with the distribution in the nearby countries, one team offered to help with the spreading out the words among the swim clubs in their country, Brazilian team decided to do a test in a warmup pool and it worked beautifully, It took us 3 minutes to do the test and to get the results and 10 minutes to discuss the results. 3. I have learned a great deal about how the swimming system organized in various countries, what are the responsibilities on the national and local levels. 4. One of the cool discussions was with Omega team. Omega is an official timing partner of World Aquatics. I asked them about changing swimming speed numbers that they show during the competition, because our tests show much higher variability. We had a fascinating discussion, they brought me to their command center and showed me their approach. Indeed, my hypothesis was correct - they average out the speed changes. More importantly they were interested in what and how we do our analysis. We will talk again. It seems like competitions is a good way for us to get the word out and to find the right coaches.
