The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 freed enslaved people in Confederate states, but did not immediately end slavery in certain places under Confederate control. On June 19,1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free. June 19th became known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day. Fahrenheit Advisors recognizes Juneteenth and proudly hosted a celebration with Fulton Bank honoring the impact of three African American women serving the Richmond, VA community specifically in the area of housing. The celebration included speeches from honorees Dianna Bowser, President & CEO of Southside Community Development & Housing Corporation, Inc., Madelyn M. Peay CEO of Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity, and Tammy Neale, CPTD CEO of Virginia Housing. Featured artists included artist Virginia Coleman and poet and author Dorothy Marie Rice. Special thanks to Linda Melton, Karen Frye, and Curt Myers of Fulton Bank for making this possible.
