Our #Humanities colleagues at the #AustralianCatholicUniversity need our help. You may have seen the news about the cuts being made to staffing? It’s actually a decimation of the 3 Humanities institutes. From the Change.org #petition: “A prominent priority of former ACU Vice-Chancellor Greg Craven AO (2008-2021) was to establish and strengthen serious study of the humanities at ACU, on the premise that these disciplines are central to the historic Catholic intellectual tradition that serves as the university’s most distinctive feature in the wider tertiary education sector. …Upon Professor Craven’s retirement in 2021, Professor Zlatko Skrbi, …became his successor… Almost immediately Professor Skrbis began attempting to dismantle the research strategy of his predecessor. His attempts to do so were slow moving and small scale until late 2022 when he appointed a new Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise. …The key inflection point in this agenda was the release of a draft change plan on 12 September 2023, which proposes cutting 32 full-time equivalent academic positions, of which 29 are in humanities disciplines.” The study of #Humanities is under attack in #universities around the world. DON’T let this happen in #Australia! Please sign the #OpenLetter (link in Guardian article) and the Change.org petition. And share both widely. https://lnkd.in/g-hXsBfg https://lnkd.in/gPD-3egD

Exploring Institutional Autonomy and Academic Freedom (@Council on Higher Education Conference) with Ahmed Shaikh, Ronel Blom, Magnate Ntombela, and Esther Martins Today's panel discussion was an eye-opener for me. It struck me that as Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs), we might have been fiddling with questions like "Why can't we call ourselves universities?" while our higher education Rome is burning. The discussion made it clear that we have to lift our heads, elevate our dialogues, reform our curricula, and work together to build a diverse but unified higher education system that will serve the needs of our nation. Moreover, fostering trust, both among ourselves and with regulatory bodies, is paramount. We are the leaders we have been waiting for, and our time is now. #Whatwilloursilencesayaboutus?

"Despite these tragedies in Israel and Palestine, we can model the kind of FUTURE we wish for ourselves and our students. We must maintain and strengthen the bonds of friendship and collegiality that cut across political, ethnic, and religious differences, especially in the face of the rising tides of violence and hatred abroad and on university campuses. Our fate here at MIT can and must be different. Through living and working together we can become wiser and more compassionate." A letter by MIT faculty

This is an important acknowledgement from the University of Manitoba. I also hope this serves as the beginning of a broader conversation about decolonizing informed consent and ethics processes in academia and academic research that must honour people we work with, their customs, their ways of being, their agency, autonomy, self-determination, and are trauma informed as opposed to (in some instances) bureaucratic mechanisms for consideration of just legal liability of institutions rooted in euro-centric approaches. I look forward to many discussions on the topic over the months and years to come. #traumaawareness #informedconsent #impactassessment
Today was a heavy and important day for our university. UM has formally apologized for the actions of its community members who, starting in the 1890s, desecrated Indigenous graves and mishandled their remains. And over the past 130 years, UM has also accepted stewardship of Indigenous Ancestors and belongings and we taught with, displayed and studied these ancestral remains and belongings without consent from First Nations, Inuit and Métis families, communities and Nations. We dehumanized Indigenous Peoples to justify our behavior and failed to recognize their sovereignty and dignity. The University of Manitoba did not live up to its ideals in their true form and today we apologized for these past wrongs and atone for these failures. This university wants to be in the right relationship with Indigenous communities of Turtle Island and we are committed to transforming our institution so that we can truly be a university for Manitoba. https://lnkd.in/erRsvAuY
