🌟 What is Target 4 of Roadmap 2.0? 🌟 The fourth target is to achieve an average of 30% postconsumer recycled content or responsibly sourced biobased content across all plastic packaging. US Plastics Pact releases new road map with 2030 plastics targets The U.S. Plastics Pact on Monday released an updated strategic plan to help participating companies and organizations, or “activators,” change how they design, use and reuse plastics in their packaging. The plan aims to continue work on existing 2025 targets that are unlikely to be met Dubbed Roadmap 2.0, this version still uses 2020 as the baseline year and sets goals for 2030 that include reducing virgin plastic use by 30%, recycling 50% of plastic packaging and achieving an average of 30% post-consumer recycled or responsibly sourced biobased content in plastic packaging. These new targets are the same as, or very similar to, the goals laid out in the original strategy, Roadmap to 2025, with the deadline moved from 2025 to 2030 and a couple additions. Work toward the Roadmap 2.0 targets will begin Jan. 1, 2026. Find the article in the comment

There is a loudening call for #simplification of #plastics. Plastics can be great tools, but their ingredient list is often (partially or entirely) undocumented. The call for #mandatory #plastics #disclosures along the #plastics #value #chain is also loudening, since plastics disclosures are part of the solution. Some new evidence on the impurities found in recycled PE (polyethylene) plastics is collected in a downloadable dataset of organic pollutants identified and quantified in recycled polyethylene pellets. The recently published study is based on 28 plastic samples collected from more than 10 countries. The study focused on collecting directly from plastics recycling locations. The study reports that the persistence of #herbicides and #pesticides is the most prevelant cause of contamination in the 28 samples of recycled plastic pellets in this specific study. Plastics, as an industrial material, are not a single thing. The various types of plastics around the planet contain thousands of chemicals. And the issues with the ingredients of plastics are manyfold: 1. some of these plastic ingredients possess known and documented hazardous properties (the data is there) 2. others chemicals found in plastics lack reliable hazard data (the data is not there or very limited, largely undocumented) 3. besides hazardous and undocumented chemicals, there are also non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) that contaminate the formula of plastics All three issues arise when plastics are recylced for further use in the plastics value chain, because there is little focus in the vlaue chain on simplification, ingredient list disclosures. Regulation is largely absent: 1. less than 1 % of plastics chemicals are subject to international regulation. 2. Mandatory and transparent disclosure reporting of ingredients /chemicals is often lacking. 3. oxo biodegradable plastics are materials that are mainly made of standard conventional plastics such as PE, PP, PET etc. with some “special” additives. These additives are catalytic materials which help the products to biodegrade in a two-step process: oxidation and then biodegradation. A recent Court decision, based on scientific studies available at the time of the Single use Plastics Directive’s adoption, highlights concerns about the low to non-existent level of biodegradation of this material.
