Did you know that the average EU citizen discards more than 190kg (419 lbs) of wrappers, boxes, bottles, cartons and cans each year? The European Parliament recently passed new regulations on plastic packaging and waste in member states. The legislation sets binding targets for reuse, collection and recycling of packaging materials and mandates that all packaging be fully recyclable by 2030. Important regulatory update from Europe: The European Parliament has adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates new binding targets for reuse, collection and recycling of packaging, and outright bans on a range of disposable plastic wrappers, miniature bottles and bags deemed unnecessary. On the topic of recycled content allocation for products made from chemically recycled plastic waste, the European Commission decided on a ‘mass balance’ approach (fuel exempt), which is supported by the chemicals industry. The weekend is knocking on our door. Next week will be an important week for our industry. I’ve been thinking a lot about the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation – particularly around the reuse proposals which have the potential to dramatically increase the amount of plastic packaging waste in the market. I really struggle to see why we would want to create more plastic waste when paper already has an average recycling rate of nearly 90% across the EU and is already circular…! If you have a minute free this weekend, please take a read to learn more on Mondi’s position on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), especially ahead of the vote in the European Parliament next week, here https://brnw.ch/21wEfPy #SustainablePackaging #CircularEconomy #ResourceEfficiency #PackagingPolicy #PPWR #PackagingWaste

With the average European generating almost 190 kg (419 pounds) of packaging waste each year, it's great to see the EU doubling down on packaging and single-use plastic waste with the proposal of new reduction targets. Earlier this week I gave a presentation on the global issues of waste management in supply chain management class. But Massachusetts and plastic were my area of focus, not the entire globe. Did you know that MA generated a massive 3.4 billion plastic bottles in the last year? read this article https://lnkd.in/eJKphTtc How in the world is Massachusetts still producing so much plastic in a city full of professionals, researchers, and bright minds? Is this a problem of ignorance/ lack of awareness? I'm not sure. But this is what I learnt and ponder with. 1. Waste Management Inc. is a leading waste management company with a record recycling of 5 million plastic waste. The company works on a reverse supply chain strategy where the company picks up waste from consumer and delivers it recycle houses. 2. In the last 5 years, the City of Boston implemented innovative programs such as Zero Waste, Green New Deal, and Plastic Bag Ban. Has the city been successful in enacting change? 3. Is merely banning the use of plastic in local offices sufficient to address this major issue? An easy solution that we all can follow - 3 R's - reduce, reuse, and recycle. #recycle #awareness

Another exemplary move towards the reduction of single-use plastic! The European Union is expected to institute a new packaging regulation that creates targets for packaging minimization, recyclability, and reusability, in addition to banning certain formats. Each member state will be expected to reduce their packaging waste by at least 15% by 2040. Additionally, this regulation will ban single-use plastic packaging for less than 1.5 kgs of fruits and vegetables beginning in 2030. What an impact this initiative will make! #singleuseplastic #plasticpollution #plasticfree #zerowaste #climatechange

Spanish organization Ecoembes has been accused by Zero Waste Europe and the Zero Waste Alliance of manipulating plastic recycling data. A study revealed that they claimed a 71% collection rate for small plastic bottles, but the actual figure is only 36%. This falls short of Spain's legal target of 70% by 2023. The study suggests implementing a deposit return system for cans, bottles, and cartons, which has proven effective in achieving up to 90% reuse and recycling rates globally. #plasticrecycling #zerowaste

💡 PPWR alert ahead of the final trilogue meeting next week Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation cannot be a game changer for plastic waste management in the EU without reassuring the European plastics recycling industry that we are serious about finding a solution for our own waste. Policymakers must ensure that the proximity principle – where waste is managed as close as possible to its place of production is maintained in their final proposal to keep the regional circularity perspective. Additional safeguards must be included as well: control and verification mechanisms, such as third-party audited certifications - and not self-declaration - what is a status quo of today. #PPWR #plasticrecyclers #plasticsrecycling #plasticpackaging #plasticrecyclerseurope #circulareconomy

"The European Parliament adopted its position on new EU-wide packaging rules that aim to tackle waste and boost reuse and recycling," reports Melissa Bradshaw. These packaging rules aim to reduce plastic packaging. Members of the European Parliament are also attempting to ban the use of 'forever chemicals like Bisphenol A in food contact packaging. This could have a significant positive effect on waste reduction. Government regulation will play a major role if we want real, sustainable progress. #WasteReduction #Sustainability #PlasticPackaging

: New chapter for sustainability in Europe! The European Parliament has enacted tough new packaging laws to reduce waste by up to 15% by 2040. These regulations target a reduction in plastic use, a cap on packaging empty space, and a ban on certain single-use plastics and PFASs in food packaging. A cleaner future is on the horizon! 🌱 #SustainableEurope #EUGreenDeal #WasteReduction

When you think about packaging, what do you consider *reuse*? Today EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation still does not classify in-home-refilling as packaging reuse. 🤔 Thank you Archana and Packaging Europe for highlighting the opportunity of in-home-filling solutions and reusable bottles that can help to reduce plastic waste, conserve resources, and promote the European #circulareconomy #RaceToRefill #closetheloop https://lnkd.in/dcPdmDrj
