When we entered African markets with the journey was a real eye-opener. Accustomed to Dubai's ease of doing business setup, figuring out the intricate business landscape in Africa proved challenging. Understanding pricing strategies and market nuances felt overwhelming at first. We adopted aggressive pricing, aiming to build our reputation quickly. Making decisions based on data, rather than gut feelings, took time and it was a two-year journey to find the right formula. One significant challenge was aligning with local needs– As new entrants, understanding the decision cycle posed difficulties. The trial and error experiences were not just financially expensive but also affected how others perceived us. Despite the hurdles, this journey taught me priceless lessons and I went back to the drawing board, determined to overcome these obstacles. It demanded time, energy, and resources, but it strengthened my resilience. My story in Africa isn't just about facing challenges, it's a testament to commitment to adapt, learn, and grow. Have you ever wondered how the United Arab Emirates (UAE) became one of the most prosperous and innovative countries in the world? How they managed to transform their desert land into a modern oasis of skyscrapers, malls, and parks? How they diversified their economy from oil dependence to a hub of trade, tourism, and technology? The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, each with its own ruler, culture, and identity. Now, imagine if we could apply the same principles and strategies to our own region, the Northern States of Nigeria. Imagine if we could form a United Northern States (UNS), that would unite us under a common goal, a common interest, and a common destiny. Imagine if we could leverage our strengths, overcome our challenges, and unleash our potential. What would be the benefits of forming a UNS? Here are some of the possible advantages: Economic growth: A UNS would create a larger and more integrated market, that would boost trade, investment, and production. A UNS would also enable us to diversify our economy, and reduce our reliance on oil revenues. A UNS would also allow us to pool our resources, and invest in infrastructure, education, and health, that would improve our living standards and human development. Security: A UNS would enhance our security, by providing a collective defense against external and internal threats. A UNS would also help us to address the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, inequality, and corruption. A UNS would also foster a culture of peace, dialogue, and reconciliation, among our diverse ethnic and religious groups. These are some of the benefits that a UNS could bring to our region, and to our country. But, how can we make this vision a reality? What are the steps and actions that we need to take? What are the challenges and obstacles that we need to overcome? These are some of the questions that I would like to explore and discuss with you, in my future posts.
