Perhaps the most valuable contribution of my PhD to #solarenergy #research was published #openaccess while I was on a cycling tour in September. A new model to account for the spectral influence on #photovotlaic performance is developed and validated empirically in this study. The mean absolute error in performance predictions is shown to be cut by up to 60% relative to a widely-used approach based on air mass and atmospheric precipitable water content. This model does, however, rely on spectral data, which is not always available. This may serve as additional motivation for the improvement of spectral irradiance simulations and increased deployment of spectral irradiance sensors in the field. Lasers comprising invisible light in the mid-infrared range can be applied to figure out within the blink of an eye what is in the air or in the water - whether there are greenhouse gas pollutants, toxic nitrates, substances or gases linked to diseases found in a person's breath. Even more efforts are being made worldwide to overcoming challenges associated with mid-infrared lasers, their sensitiveness to vibrations, changes in environment temperature and humidity, balanced with the laser intensity strong enough to detect relevant amounts of substances to ensure accuracy (https://lnkd.in/d7kKZ8F7). By fostering an environment of open dialogue and shared insights, we believe in collective progress towards overcoming hurdles and unlocking the full potential of mid-infrared lasers. Consortium of 13 partners under #M3NIR project is also dedicated to unlocking new potential of photonics-based sensing in terms of performance, reduction of footprint, energy consumption and costs. A mid-IR based sensing solution for monitoring of greenhouse gases, contaminants in a water and human breath analysis is a core focus of the #M3NIR.
