NearStar Fusion, a five-person startup in Chantilly, Virginia, has a new energy-generating approach using nuclear fusion. The company is training plasma railguns to get over the hurdle of generating more power than is put in, Technical.ly reported on Monday.
Nuclear fusion is considered the holy grail of the energy sector that will solve the world's energy woes once achieved. Unlike nuclear fission, where heavy atoms are split in a nuclear reactor, nuclear fusion aims to fuse atoms of lighter elements like hydrogen to make stable products like helium, much like the process that occurs on the Sun.
NearStar is a sister concern of HyperJet Fusion, also based in Chantilly and researching fusion energy using plasma jets. Instead of focusing on how to increase output from the reaction of nuclear fusion, NearStar's team is confident in reducing the energy input needed for ignition - the beginning of nuclear fusion. According to the company," this can be achieved by using plasma railguns, which are energy efficient.
There is another advantage of doing this. When nuclear fusion does become a reality in the future, the use of high-end lasers will also require highly technical staff to run the power plant. On the other hand, NearStar believes that a powerplant that uses railguns could be operated by upskilling car mechanics and maintenance workers, a better proposition from a commercial perspective.
The startup has a handful of people on board but is expanding its team to include 20 scientists and engineers and aims to break even in the next five years. CEO Amit Singh, who previously worked with a data analytics firm, believes that all components to make nuclear fusion a reality are available, and the company's simple approach will help reach there sooner rather than later.

1wAn intriguing theoretical possibility, but time will tell how or if this approach emerges as a successful and scalable solution to this persistent challenge. They are focusing on the right problem.
