The United Nations Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment #unfss2023 ends today in Rome, Italy. 🥘 The event was an opportunity for countries to review progress on the commitments to action, identify bottlenecks and close the implementation gap for #foodsystems transformation. Some of my key takeaways from my experience on a panel at #SustAg2023 discussing advancing sustainability through collaboration. ✔ When we polled the audience about their experiences with collaborating with supply chain stakeholders, working with producers dominated. However, Debbie Lyons-Blythe said it best (paraphrasing) “If you want to get to know me, as a producer, you have to get your feet in the soil of my operation.” There is so much variation from operation to operation that solutions must be tailored to each situation and the only way to truly understand is to be there to see it for yourself. ✔ As Sara Place pointed out, it’s easy to say that there are lots of interventions out there to address enteric methane, for example, but the science isn’t settled and it’s critical that we continue to collect large datasets to determine the impact of potential interventions. AgNext at Colorado State University is doing really valuable work in this area. We also need to see how these interventions work in the real world and so data collection at the producer level will be increasingly needed. ✔ Amy Skoczlas Cole discussed the need for a framework that will manage how this data sharing will work. In addition, connecting “regen-ready” producers with impactful interventions will become key as we look to implement current interventions and as new interventions are developed. ✔ Genetic is a key sustainability intervention, not the least because it is cumulative and permanent with significant co-benefits for the entire supply chain. But, it’s critical that any intervention developer recognizes the challenges and opportunities described above and is an active part of the conversation with all key stakeholders. Groups like U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) (as well as other commodities programs) are playing a significant convening role to align common purposes and set industry goals. We must work together as a protein value chain, but we also just need to get stuff done. We don’t have all of the answers but progress, adjusted as we go, is imperative.
