According to Harvard Business Review, brands committed to genuine sustainability efforts are poised to lead the market. With younger generations prioritizing environmental protection, the demand for sustainable products is on the rise. Second hand is bad for global sustainability: New paper out now. Second hand can be part of the transition to a more sustainable society, but not in the way that is now being used and promoted. To ensure global sustainability, in line with agreed climate, social and environmental goals, we need to look at, and challenge, existing business models, overproduction/overconsumption, the way we shop, what kind of garments and things we truly need, and what lifestyles and societies we want in the future. The results might surprise some, but we hope this paper will trigger a much needed discussion about the actual impact of current second hand and circularity initiatives. The paper builds on the work with an expanded climate and innovation agenda, where the core question is how we deliver a future where everyone live flourishing lives on a regenerative planet in balance, not just make current unsustainable systems less unsustainable while ignoring solutions that are actually sustainable. I came across a good-news story about sustainable business practices that I’d like to share. This month’s Sustainability Magazine profiles international packaging giant DS Smith, who, “As of May 2024 … has replaced more than 1.2 billion pieces of plastic—an incredible 16 months ahead of its original goal to replace one billion pieces by 2025.” The article: https://lnkd.in/gk5s5efQ goes on to explain their mission. “DS Smith’s achievement lies in reducing or removing plastic in consumer-facing packaging–things like fruit, vegetables and soft drink bottles. It’s all part of DS Smith’s Now & Next Sustainability Strategy, which supports the company-wide purpose to Redefine Packaging for a Changing World.” DS Smith’s commitment to reducing plastic packaging makes me feel more hopeful. And it’s the kind of story that inspires the whole PowerSpeaking team to continue working toward our sustainability goals. Sustainability comes at a hefty price – or does it? Speaking in Exhibition News magazine this Recycle Awareness Week, David Humphreys, ESSA member and Director at Green Circle Solutions, offers his advice on why it doesn’t always have to cost more for the events industry to get on board with sustainability. Sustainability is an area where ESSA is leading and supporting, firstly with its comprehensive Sustainability Accreditation and with the face-to-face Sustainability Awareness training course. The bottom line? Businesses should be doing what they can, and it doesn’t have to cost the earth.
