The Journal of American Medical Association published study this week showing that private equity acquisitions of hospitals resulted in 25.4% increase in adverse events.
A few thoughts:
1)Not surprising but definitely concerning & something hospital/health system boards must have on their radar
2)This doesn’t mean all hospital PE is bad
3)This data is based on 2009-2019…and we’re just now realizing this is a problem. We’ve got to move faster to create meaningful transparency and accountability for quality outcomes.
Most people have no idea what the quality is of the their local hospitals or what that rating system even is. I can see a fast food restaurant’s sanitation grade when I roll in the drive-through. It needs to be that easy for patients and hospitals so they can find the best & safest options.

As a #pharmacist who grew up in rural America, I’m proud of the work our team is doing to help pharmacies like the ones that serve my hometown. Being a pharmacist is more than dispensing medications, it’s being a trusted voice for patients – especially in areas with long wait times and long commute times to see doctors. Real world impact of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) on independent pharmacies: In the latest episode of the Missouri Pharmacy Podcast, Ron dives deep into this pressing issue and its consequences for pharmacies, especially independents, across the country.
Key Takeaway #1: Independent pharmacists are vital community resources, especially during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. While many businesses and facilities were closing down, community pharmacists stepped up and ensured patients had access to medicines and healthcare information.
Key Takeaway #2: Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) pose a significant challenge to small and independent pharmacists. Low reimbursements caused by PBMs have forced some independent pharmacies to close down, leaving communities without a vital healthcare resource.
Key Takeaway #3: To level the playing field, pharmacists are advocating for equitable reimbursement rates and fair treatment compared to in-house PBM pharmacies. Additionally, the steering of patients to specific pharmacies, including mail-order facilities, and burdensome audits by third-party entities are driving up healthcare costs and adversely affecting patient care.
Together, let's work towards a healthcare system that supports all pharmacists in delivering the best care possible for their patients.

You've heard of food deserts, but did you know pharmacy deserts also exist primarily in underserved communities?
Getting medication into the hands of the patients who need it is a crucial step in the cascade of care. Life-saving medications cannot work if the people who need them cannot obtain them.
By linking members to resources and escalating issues, our program helps to close the loop and overcome gaps in care for members.

We are all accountable for our performance, patients and communities
Adhering to a protocol simply means the average person gets good care, but it also means the outliers are not helped and may be harmed.
