Fri 2023-09-22 20:51 Statement by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the Guyana-Venezuela Border Issue CARICOM Secretariat Statement by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the Guyana-Venezuela Border Issue The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) notes with grave concern the contents of a Communique emanating from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela regarding the announcement made by our sister Member State, the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, about its intention to open bids for certain oil blocks in the waters adjacent to Guyana’s coast. CARICOM views the stated intention of Venezuela to “apply all the necessary measures” to prevent the operations licensed by Guyana in its waters, as a threat of the use of force contrary to international law. It is also not in keeping with the long-standing position of the Latin American and Caribbean countries that our Region must remain a Zone of Peace. CARICOM has also taken note of the decision of the Venezuelan National Assembly to conduct a popular referendum on defending Venezuela’s claim. CARICOM expresses the hope that Venezuela will engage fully in the process before the International Court of Justice, which has determined that it has the jurisdiction in the case brought before it. The Court’s final decision will ensure a resolution that is peaceful, equitable and in accordance with international law. The Caribbean Community reiterates its full and unequivocal support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, including its right to peacefully develop the resources of its territory. 22 September 2023

The report on the EU-Switzerland relations notes on the topic of R&I "The report underlined the importance of EU-Switzerland cooperation in research, innovation and development, fostering Europes role as a strong player in this field of research and innovation, and strengthening the European education system. It called for the EU and Switzerland to find a common approach to the benefit of citizens in order to achieve mutually beneficial cooperation, especially as regards Switzerlands participation in all EU programmes in the 2021-2027 period."
The Lukas MANDL's report on EU-Switzerland relations was adopted in #EP plenary yesterday. The report underlines the importance of EU-Swiss cooperation in #research, #innovation and #education and expresses "the urgent recommendation to both the European Commission and the Federal Council of Switzerland to quickly start and soon conclude negotiations for a package solution on institutional questions". Taiwan’s International Engagement and the Way Forward WoodrowWilsonCenter 29 Aug 2023 Taiwan’s international legal status is unique, and remains far from settled within the context of international law. In the realm of international politics, this issue is further complicated. While some align with the one China principle, many states and international organizations have their own “one China policy”—recognizing the PRC as China’s sole legal representative—while not accepting China’s assertion over Taiwan. Beijing seems intent on erasing these divergent perspectives. While efforts to promote the one China principle on an international scale is not new for Beijing, the PRC has intensified its push to promote its own interpretation. Beijing’s intensified discourse appears to be aimed at lending legitimacy to its assertion of sovereignty over Taiwan through misrepresentation. Yu-Jie Chien, the Wilson Center’s 2023 Taiwan Scholar, will discuss how Taiwan’s continued exclusion from the international regime has implications not only for Taipei’s representation in international organizations, but also for the integrity of global governance at large.
