I'm just home from Babble Frost 2024, and we were joined by Rachel Sharp MCIOF (Cert), fundraising manager for My Name'5 Doddie, with Babble now a Corporate Partner. Rachel enlightened us as we learned some truly harrowing stats, and watched a video filmed with Doddie about a month or so before he passed - I could feel the tears forming, and I know most of the room was the same. I heard the mutters of "bloody hell", "brutal", and the long expell of air as people processed what we'd read, heard, and watched...here's some highlights. 1 in 300 people will be handed the death sentence that is Motor Neuron Disease. Most of those people will have waited around a year for diagnosis. The average life expectancy once diagnosed is a mere 12-18 months. With many dying within just 3 months when the disease is particularly aggressive. 5000 people in the UK right now are living with MND. This might seem low based on a 1 in 300 figure. That's because of how quickly it will kill a person. It is a literal death sentence...right now. There has not been a new drug to help treat MND in nearly 40yrs. That drug *might* extend life expectancy by around 3 months. Treatment itself has not substantially changed in 20yrs. It is almost guarantee that you personally know someone who has been killed by MND. It IS an ABSOLUTE guarantee that you know someone who knows someone killed by MND (for my connections...you know me, and it killed a childhood neighbour of mine). I also know at least three other victims at just 1 degree of separation). Again...literal death sentence. As a Corporate Partner to My Name'5 Doddie, Babble have committed to raising £250,000! So I will be doing something later this year to help raise funds - I've always fancied a charity boxing match...if you know how to make that happen and can help me -let me know. Nearly $30K in the 2023 Jeanne & Martha Fore a Cure cancer research fund to date. Nearly $20K en route from committed sponsorships that are not reflected in our current total. That’s $50K+ going directly to the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center to fund the research needed to find a cure for cancer. Courage ✅ Discipline ✅ Respect for Others ✅ Integrity ✅ Loyalty ✅ Selfless Commitment ✅ Total Professionalism ✅✅✅ Cor Blimey Racing showed all these values throughout the weekend whether they realised it or not, competing in the UK's largest kart race of the year - the British 24hr at Teesside. 313 managed P9/23 in the hire rookie class, 28/53 hire overall (best overall result to date). 213 a P5/8 in hire pro class, 26/53 hire overall. Although plagued with mechanical issues throughout the night they were slicing their way through traffic like nobody's business, gaining class positions right up until the last lap of the race! ... and 113 with a P1 in the hire elite class and hire overall!! Not only all of these great achievements with each kart, but we've managed to raise over £1,100 towards Pancreatic Cancer UK, more than doubling the initial £500 goal. We choose a charity each year but this one was chosen due to a team member having lost a parent to pancreatic cancer earlier in the year, hitting very close to home. It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months. Survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, yet for pancreatic cancer, this is not the case. This money will go a long way to helping both care for those with the disease, along with research into early diagnosis and prevention, saving lives. Regardless of our individual results, the 113 kart winning the race means the whole team won the race, no question. Providing children a positive role model addresses the need in our communities to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, resulting in self-sufficiency.   Research shows that children matched through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin's programs are more likely to remain in school, earn a college degree, improve social confidence and avoid risky behavior. Children in the #BBBSNEW program are: ~52% more likely to remain in school ~75% more likely to earn a four-year degree ~48% more likely to volunteer ~81% more likely to hold a leadership role in an organization   In addition, an anonymous donor has generously offered to match donations raised during Miles for Matches! This means that every dollar donated will be doubled, making twice the impact on the lives of children in Northeast Wisconsin.
