So Netflix released the viewing stats for nearly all its titles - internet goes wild! (and of course I was going to comment) Our WWS titles are making waves!. “A través del mar,” our second film in the Netflix trilogy based on Ariana Godoy’s Wattpad sensation, gathered over 42M hours viewed. And “A través de mi ventana” is no slouch either, with 33M viewing hours, making it Netflix’s 4th most-watched non-English film! WEBTOON-based adaptations are also killing it. “See You in My 19th Life” and “Bloodhounds” scored a whopping 146M hours viewed. 🙌 These numbers highlight the global popularity of webnovel and webcomic adaptations and we’re proud to work with fantastic creators and engage passionate fans. But the icing on the cake - we have the sneak peak to the numbers behind WEBTOON and Wattpad content far before millions are spent in production. My major take away from the response to this news? The industry is taking notice of this perfect blend of art and science - We need to create beautiful stories the world craves, but the creative and the data behind those stories cannot be separated. In a past paradigm shift I was Creative Director at the agency that pioneered DVD Production at scale for the film industry and brought in the first film studio to adopt the technology, Warner Bros. At the time we were combating DVD name calling as inferior tech by some big name filmmakers like Spielberg and Lucas, who swore they would never let their films be put on to DVDs. We approached the problem of overcoming that perception from a different angle and offered a way for the studio's to monetize their dormant film content, which was being stored and falling apart in the studio vaults, as a bright, shiny new product to put on the shelves. Seeing Netflix exit the DVD rental business is the end of an era. It could seem like the final stage for this medium. But perhaps it's really a new opportunity to deliver a high-end limited edition branded product experience. In Fall 2022, #streaming companies realized that their content spend was bloated. The capital spent on content did not directly result in hooking new viewers - therefore leading to misaligned cost-to-revenue ratios. The result: #Streamflation . While streaming companies increase their subscription prices, they are now experimenting with the upper limit consumers are willing to spend for their platform services. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has argued that streaming services are underpriced. Competitors are now following suit with this theory, as Bob Iger said in a quarterly call with investors last week: Subscriber insensitivity to price means there is more room for further increases. New pricing strategies in streaming is another marker of a larger restructuring taking place in Hollywood. These tactics sideline #content and consumer preferences to optimize for low churn rate and higher subscriber acquisition. Appreciate your thoughtfulness Who doesn't love watching #television, especially new shows? What new show, aka "original", are you watching? Tired of what we used to call re-runs aka "library content"? Can't watch another #MASH or #seinfeld episode? Or can you not stop? What drives people to join a streaming service? What keeps viewers??? Our Global Institute for the Future of Television (#GIFT) Boston Consulting Group (BCG) spends a great deal of effort trying to understand RETENTION. And we know that "having something to watch" is a key driver of retention. And our research has shown that in the most recent past, original productions typically attract viewers to a streaming service, and it's the licensed content that gets them to stay. What we all know in our #GIFT and our industry is that it is necessary to watch (pun intended) what Netflix and Ted Sarandos say and do.
