You will then be invited by email to book an enrolment session. Thanks for uplifting, David, and to Kathryn Palmer of Inside Higher Ed for including my thoughts in her story. Creating truly quality and stackable (not just in theory) non-degree credentials is really difficult to pull off, but it is worth taking the extra time and money to do. Just because some folks want affordable, short-term training to meet their short-term needs, doesn't mean colleges and 'alternative providers' should set them up to start at ground zero when they're seeking longer-term training to meet their longer term needs. Prior credential attainment should count. In 2024, earning a bachelor's degree is still the safest ticket to a family-sustaining job, long-term. As Scott Carlson astutely recently wrote for The Chronicle of Higher Education, "Although many employers (even state agencies) have dropped degree requirements amid the enthusiasm for #skills-based hiring, companies are largely still hiring people with college degrees." 🚨ICYMI, hiring of non-degree workers is down, not up, since the pandemic, and what's worse is despite the hype around non-degree pathways and #microcredentials...short-term credentials leading to pay-off have actually fallen according to Lumina Foundation's 2024 Stronger Nation Report, writes Jamie Merisotis: https://lnkd.in/eGuBgJqU Eric Kelderman summed it up great on X, "While some people will buy the argument that college isn’t worth it, wealthy and connected families know better: They will continue to spend huge sums to get their kids into the “right” school and the “right” program." The promise of #microcredentials can also put working-class Americans pursuing short-term programs in peril. A lot of them don't pay or if they do - not for long thanks to #AI-induced automation and augmentation - reskilling is often needed. That makes the case for #stackablity even stronger. It's a win-win for #employers and #students. Even if they don't see the immediate utility when considering non-degree programs, they probably will a few years down the road. Ok so quality non-degree/microcredential creation and stackability is important. How to do it? Mayo College of Further Education and Training launches volunteer initiative. Mayo College of Further Education is thrilled to announce an innovative addition to our curriculum, commencing September 2024. As part of this initiative, all our estimated 800 full-time students will participate in 10 hours of voluntary work, integral to their work experience modules. This endeavour promises a multitude of benefits, including: Contributing a remarkable 8,000 voluntary hours within our region. Inspiring our students to engage in voluntary activities, thereby enriching and supporting their local communities. Fostering Transversal Skills: This initiative is designed to significantly nurture transversal skills among our students. By actively participating in voluntary work, students will have the opportunity to cultivate a diverse range of competencies pivotal for their holistic development. These skills encompass. Communication Skills: Voluntary work necessitates interaction with a varied demographic, honing both verbal and non-verbal communication proficiencies. Teamwork and Collaboration: Students will be immersed in collaborative endeavours, fostering teamwork and appreciation for diverse perspectives. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Real-world challenges encountered during voluntary work will stimulate critical thinking and innovative problem-solving techniques. Leadership and Initiative: Voluntary activities inherently promote leadership and initiative-taking, empowering students to drive positive change. Adaptability and Flexibility: Exposure to diverse environments fosters adaptability and flexibility, vital attributes in today's dynamic world. Time Management and Organizational Skills: Juggling voluntary commitments alongside academic responsibilities enables effective time management and organisational prowess. Civic Responsibility and Ethical Awareness: Engagement in voluntary work nurtures a sense of civic responsibility and ethical consciousness, instilling a commitment to societal well-being. To formally recognise the significant contribution of these 10 hours of voluntary work, they will be integrated into our Work Experience Certificate. This certificate serves as a testament to our students' dedication to community service and the development of invaluable transversal skills. By acknowledging this commitment within their official certification, we affirm the importance of voluntary work as an integral aspect of holistic education. We will be holding an Open Day on 22nd October from 12-2pm in all our locations for voluntary organisations to attend the college to recruit students to assist with them voluntary activities. I always kind of geek out over poll results - Did you know that in a recent poll conducted by the National Skills Coalition 82% of voters indicated support to increase government funding for skills training in America? And that 69% said they would be more likely to support a candidate who champions investment in skills training? It goes without saying that our skilled workforce is behind in America and that funding these programs are crucial to sustaining and growing our economy. As a charity committed to ensuring young people from low-income backgrounds secure and succeed in employment, EY Foundation is pleased to join over thirty organisations in support of this letter. Young Enterprise UK’s open letter to the Secretary of State for Education and the Chancellor of the Exchequer calls for applied learning in school to increase access to opportunities and work-readiness by translating knowledge into action.   Why is this important? 📈 Applied Learning has a direct correlation with increased student motivation, engagement and gaining the necessary competencies to secure future employment. 📊 Breaking down barriers to learning and employing more practical and creative approaches results in an overall increase in student attainment. 🔎 The need for this is magnified for young people from low-income backgrounds, who are at greater risk of losing access to education and are twice as likely as their better-off peers to become NEET.
