Energy Peace Partners are helping communities either gain first-time electricity access or get greater access in places where they have very little. Why are these efforts so crucial? 💡 The impacts are far-reaching. For instance, the installation of streetlights significantly enhances safety for children and women, especially after sunset. Electrifying schools and hospitals plays a critical role in improving health and education outcomes, making a world of difference. We recently shared our Regen report, outlining how to unlock local and community energy for a just transition in Scotland. As a key part of that work, we wanted to know what citizens themselves thought about local and community energy and how it can best work for them. To do that, we ran a "People's Panel": a deliberative process with 22 Scottish citizens from groups who have typically been less engaged in the energy transition so far. This report and Rebecca Ford's accompanying blog outlines our process and findings, which fed directly into our recommendations to government. What came through most strongly from the whole process, however, was just how open and engaged people were on what can be a really complex topic (those who work regularly on the likes of citizen assemblies or in communities might not find this surprising). A diverse mix of people who had not interacted before learned about how the energy system operates and various models of ownership and participation and innovation - and worked together to come up with key principles and recommendations for policymakers. It's easy to write people off as disinterested or disengaged in the energy transition. Against the backdrop of cost-of-living and a looming climate crisis, I get it. Yet with meaningful engagement (and placing some actual trust/value in the vast knowledge and insight that people and communities hold), I think we can go a hell of a lot further than trying to do this in our siloes at a distance. And if recent political events have taught us anything, it's that without bringing people on the journey, we will struggle to deliver change at the scale and pace required to meet our crucial net zero ambitions at all.
