The Superintendent of Sustainable Development of Communities at the Foundation for Amazon Sustainability, Valcléia Solidade, contributed an article to O Eco - Jornalismo Ambiental, addressing the topic "Child Labor and Making Children Responsible for the Future of the Planet." Valcléia emphasizes that sustainability is intricately linked to social, environmental, and economic aspects, highlighting the urgent need to combat child labor in Brazil. She presents alarming data about the increase in this problem in recent years, especially in the northern region of the country, and underscores the importance of emergency actions. Furthermore, Valcleia points out that defending sustainability involves community empowerment, as well as improvements in education, health, and infrastructure. An environmentally insecure space is not only toxic but also alarming. From our last post, it is worth noting that this is one of the situations members of underprivileged communities find themselves in. To create a safer space, here are some of the things we must put in place: 1. Community Empowerment: Empowering underprivileged communities to participate in environmental decision-making processes is crucial. This ensures that their unique needs and perspectives are considered in environmental policies and initiatives. 2. Sustainable Development: Sustainable development initiatives should address the specific challenges faced by underprivileged communities, promoting economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability simultaneously. 3. Education and Awareness: Lack of environmental education can contribute to a limited understanding of the importance of sustainable practices. Providing education and raising awareness can empower communities to make informed decisions about their environment. 4. Green Jobs Opportunities: Creating opportunities for green jobs in underprivileged communities can have dual benefits. It not only addresses unemployment but also contributes to environmentally sustainable practices and industries. 5. Policy Advocacy: Advocacy for policies that promote environmental justice is essential. This includes regulations that limit environmental harm and ensure that all communities have equal access to a healthy environment. It’s never too late to play a role in the liberation of these communities. Take a bold step to make an impact today. #humanity #givingbacktothecommunity #volunteering

Driving Climate & Environmental Justice through Community-Led Solutions | Program Management Expert in Social and Behavior Change & Equitable Engagement Strategies | Champion for Climate Resilience Solutions
Appreciate Arielle King for sharing Green 2.0's Transparency Report Card that highlights the trend of environmental NGO senior staff identifying as people of color over the last five years. People from marginalized populations and #environmentaljustice communities (especially Black and brown communities and the Global Majority) face the impacts of the global climate crisis and are on the frontlines of identifying ways to mitigate the worst effects of #climatechange. It's these very individuals with lived experiences who should be in positions of influence and power leading the way. I've seen way too many barriers to managerial and leadership positions due to advanced degree requirements, excess years of professional experience (for inadequate compensation "because they're nonprofit"), implicit biases toward certain applicants, and these are just a few examples of the cards stacked against qualified candidates. Someone without the specific degree listed on the JD is able to become a subject matter expert on the job. Someone who may not have X years of experience in the desired sector may have transferable skills. Someone who may not have a degree may have volunteer, internships, jobs, and lived experiences that make them uniquely qualified compared to a traditional graduate from a recognized college/university. I'd like to challenge recruiters, hiring managers, and companies to diversify how they consider potential hires with this in mind, and perhaps we'll be able to see a positive shift in our future leaders not just in the environmental NGO space but in other sectors as well. #hiringtrends #careeradvancement #careeradvice #jobseekers #jobhunt #hiringprofessionals #hiringmanagers #careerexploration #careerguidance #publichealthjobs #environmentaljobs #urbanplanning
Progress on diversity in the environmental movement has lost momentum. Green 2.0's Transparency Report Card found that between 2022-2023, no people of color were added to the senior staff of environmental NGOs. Read the full report below:
