🌊 It's so great to see that 68 countries have symbolically showed their commitment to conserving biodiversity in the high seas by signing the #highseastreaty yesterday. 🐟 The #highseastreaty is the first international agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in international waters, benefitting not only coastal but also landlocked countries. The Treaty offers the: 🐋 First legal framework to establish marine protected areas in the high seas. 🐙 A standardised approach to conducting environmental impact assessments on new activities in the high seas. 🦑 The equitable benefit sharing of marine genetic resources and digital sequence information. 🦈 Capacity building and the transfer of marine technology. After 20 years of negotiation, the United Nations has adopted a marine biodiversity treaty for the high seas, the first international agreement of its kind.    Whilst Individual nations have jurisdiction over marine biodiversity out to the edge of their own waters, there have been few, if any, protections for the natural environment on the high seas.    This treaty creates a legal framework for the creation of marine protected areas on the high seas, in order to conserve biodiversity and protect 30% of the world's land and sea by 2030.    From a shipping industry’s perspective, the High Seas Treaty agreement takes into account the International Maritime Organization’s (IMOs) role and aims to cover gaps in ocean governance to ensure that emerging high seas industries will be as well-regulated as shipping is by IMO. #news #update #oceans #oceantreaty #conservation #newsletter #UN

🌊 Celebrating a Historic Milestone for Our Oceans 🌊 After 15 years of dedicated discussions, the United Nations has sealed a momentous treaty on the high seas by consensus. This milestone marks a new era in our commitment to protecting the oceans. The high seas, those vast ocean areas beyond countries' exclusive economic zones, cover nearly half of our planet. Yet, they have long been ignored in discussions on environmental conservation. One of the game-changing aspects of this treaty is the ability to create protected marine areas in international waters. On Wednesday, 67 countries signed a new U.N. treaty aimed at protecting the world's oceans, marking a significant step towards mitigating damage inflicted on vulnerable marine ecosystems due to activities like overfishing. This global agreement for conserving biodiversity in high seas areas was formally adopted by the United Nations in June, following an agreement reached in March. It plays a vital role in achieving the "30 by 30" target set last year, which aims to protect 30% of the planet's land and sea by 2030. While nearly 70 nations signed the treaty at the United Nations General Assembly, it must undergo national-level ratification before becoming enforceable. European Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius noted that with the High Seas Treaty's signature, efforts to safeguard the ocean from human pressures and achieve the 30% protection goal gain momentum, referring to the treaty as the "constitution for the ocean." Mads Christensen, interim executive director of Greenpeace International, hailed the signings as a potent signal but emphasized the need for swift ratification by politicians to translate this symbolic moment into concrete action. EU finally signs historical treaty on high seas. One step closer to end the exploitation of international waters! The agreement provides for the common governance of about half of the Earth’s surface and 95% of the ocean’s volume, the largest habitat on our blue planet, to: - promote equity and fairness - tackle environmental degradation - fight climate change, and - prevent biodiversity loss in the high seas The adoption of this agreement is a historic achievement marking the successful end of more than a decade of multilateral work. It complements the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which provides the legal framework under which all human activities in the ocean take place.

Shape of things to come! Efforts, concentrated and concious will surely bear results over a period of time. Transport over the seas is indispensable but these efforts will make it environmental friendly too. #transportation #climatechange #nature
