𝗣𝗦𝗘&𝗚 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼-𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 PSE&G is helping lead the charge to begin implementing the first phase of the National Zero-Emission Freight Infrastructure Strategy. 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗞, 𝗡𝗝 - On April 24th, 2024, long-time New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition (NJCCC) stakeholder, PSEG, took part in the White House Roundtable on Zero-Emission Freight Infrastructure. This gathering was an important step in moving forward the first phase of the national infrastructure strategy created to implement charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure in freight hubs and corridors. Forward-thinking organizations like PSE&G, who provide much needed electric infrastructure for resilient power to freight hubs and ports, such as the Port of New Jersey, are essential in leading the way to meet this national goal of a zero-emission freight sector.   PSE&G was well represented at the roundtable by Dawn Neville. Neville, the Manager of Electric Transportation at PSE&G, leads the team that’s implementing the utility’s Electric Vehicle Charging Program for light-duty vehicles and developing a strategy to support medium/heavy-duty vehicle electrification. This team is also playing a key role in the electrification of the PSE&G fleet. “Dawn, and the team she manages, have been doing an awesome job in coordinating and engaging with its various stakeholders across its service territory”, said Chuck Feinberg, Executive Director of the New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition. “They have been a wonderful partner of NJ Clean Cities, and I congratulate her for being part of the national strategy.”   That same morning the EPA announced their 2024 Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program. Funding such as this $1 billion investment from the Inflation Reduction Act to replace non-zero-emission class 6 and 7 vehicles with zero-emission vehicles is one of the many opportunities that exist to push this strategy forward, and to help organizations who want to take action to green their fleet and clean the air.   The National Zero-Emission Freight Infrastructure Strategy will continue to unfold over the coming years, and we commend our stakeholder, PSEG, for being a vital part of this national growing initiative to clean up our freight sector, and for helping to electrify New Jersey. https://lnkd.in/ewgbpGJA

The U.S. just took a major world leadership step forward on zero emission trucks with the unveiling of the National Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy. This powerful plan outlines an all-of-government approach to speeding and growing zero emission trucks at the pace we need and in the places we need them. It does so by prioritizing, targeting and partnering with states, fleets, infrastructure providers and truck makers in those locations most ready for zero emission trucks now, and expanding in phases from there as other regions signal readiness. What I think is most important about the National Zero Emission Freight Strategy is that it is NOT scattergun and is NOT everywhere all at once! Rather, teams at DOE, DOT and the Joint Office identified where highest freight flows, biggest hubs (like ports and multi-modal sites) and community needs were, then overlayed on that where state’s had requirements to deploy (such as ACT) and where infrastructure, fleet and OEM companies were investing first.  These first priority locations are well known to industry but it is so important to recognize them: they include hubs along 1-5, I-10, I-80, I-15, parts of I-95 and the Texas Triangle. These locations also contain many of the nation’s communities most in need of clean air relief that targeted zero emission deployments can bring. Europe has an excellent infrastructure approach known as AFIR (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Requirement) that sets minimal requirements for charging and fueling along major routes. However, I think the U.S. strategy goes the next step by really focusing on where it will be most effective to start – focusing our resources - and how to grow a national system in phases the smartest way possible. I am proud that early assessment work and recommendations from CALSTART (Phasing In U.S. Charging Infrastructure) and ICCT were able to contribute, among many others, to this ground-breaking national strategy. Congratulations in particular to Alycia Gilde and Kevin George Miller for their tireless work, and key agency leads and the White House for supporting. This program, combined with smart regulations from the states and EPA, can help America build, use and grow the technologies the world needs for climate and the jobs we need for our economy. Reflecting back on a busy week, we feel very positive about the state of UK shipping which has its eyes firmly fixed on a cleaner future and the steps it must take to overcome the challenges on the journey. The #UKPortsConference 2024 has been a huge success, attracting big names from key stakeholders in shipping and beyond, with panels shedding light on the big picture challenges for UK energy and logistics infrastructure that we’ll need to overcome in order to deliver maritime decarbonisation. A big thank you to Guy Bates and Amy Beasley for sharing your infrastructure expertise, helping shipping map its route to decarbonisation in coalition with the industries it will affect. How ports decarbonise rapidly and cost-effectively has also been central to discussions. Andrew Crowe (PD Ports), Geraint Evans (UK Major Ports Group) and Matt Beeton (Port of Tyne) shared current business cases for port development, setting the scene for future growth plans and key investment areas. Our Commercial Director, Paul Barker, contributed to the lively discussions, presenting on the infrastructure needed for clean energy to power shore power & propulsion. Our key takeaways from this week: • There won't be one sustainable future fuel, Ports and Shipping Lines must prepare for a multi-fuel supply chain • Regional and global collaboration between stakeholders, across shipping and logistics, is key as we move towards this multi-fuel sustainable shipping • UK Ports are predicted to demand 4000GWh annually by 2050, stakeholders must invest in renewable energy infrastructure today • Investment in sustainable infrastructure today will abate exponential future costs Our recent investment announcement with Peel Ports Group is the first part of a £3 billion global network of 120 “clean ports” planned by NatPower Marine by 2030, enabling ship operators and cargo owners to plan clean shipping routes. We're excited to see how our discussions at the event will shape the industry and shape our future efforts to decarbonise the shipping industry.
