The summer travel season is set to heat up and many consumers want luxurious resort stays. Hyatt Hotels Corporation’s leisure travel bookings for July 4 are up 25% year over year at resort properties in the Americas. In this article, PWC shares some interesting insights into 2024 travel trends. “Economic headwinds and geopolitical tensions will likely impact hotel performance through 2024. Leisure demand, while still strong, began to soften in the back half of this year (2023) for US hotels, as other parts of the world continued to reopen their vacation destinations and leisure travelers began to once again feel safe traveling abroad.” In addition, we know, historically, occupancy tends to soften during election years. The hotel industry is the heartbeat of travel! Offering a home away from home, hotels are crucial in providing comfort and convenience to travelers. Whether business trips or leisure vacations, hotels ensure a seamless travel experience. They're not just places to stay; they're where travel memories are made, and journeys are enriched. The hotel industry is intrinsically linked to the travel industry, serving as a fundamental pillar. Hotels not only provide essential accommodations for travelers, but they also enhance the overall travel experience. This symbiosis is mutually beneficial: as travel increases, so does the demand for hotel accommodations, driving growth in the hotel industry. Conversely, a thriving hotel sector with diverse and quality offerings can attract more travelers, boosting the travel industry. Both industries work hand in hand, each contributing to the success and expansion of the other. Growth in leisure demand has moderated for US hotels. Domestic travelers have continued to seek out experiences internationally and inbound international traffic has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels. An increased appeal of short-term rentals by leisure travelers has contributed to moderating leisure demand for hotels. Individual business travel and group demand have continued to improve but have still not been able to offset the softening of leisure demand. As a result, occupancy levels have declined year-over-year in each of the past four quarters but are expected to gradually improve through the balance of this year and at least the first half of 2025. Room rate growth played a significant role in the initial recovery for US hotels but began to dampen during the last three quarters of 2023 and continued through Q1 2024.
