We are thrilled FIMC agencies Community Servings, God's Love We Deliver and Project Open Hand were among those who attended the American Heart Association’s inaugural Health Care x Food Grantee and Collaborator meeting. These agencies are among those awarded funding from the AHA as part of their Health Care by Food Initiative. This research will further demonstrate the effectiveness of #foodismedicine in health care.

Health Research Scientist & Educator | Founder of the Preventable Deaths Tracker | King's Prize Fellow
Today I finally share some good news in the world of preventable deaths NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has reviewed the reports they've received from #coroners, highlighting the impact that coroners' reports can have on organisations. While it's a relief to see that coroner reports are being used by organisations, this work is the first of its kind... so many others, like NHS England, Department of Health and Social Care, Care Quality Commission, Ministry of Justice UK & more, need to do the same! https://lnkd.in/ewPgfuiY #inquests #coronerreports #PFDs #Reg28 #preventabledeaths #deaths #patientsafety #publicsafety #openjustice

First, Congratulations to all the #healthcareproviders who work in palliative care! Your advocacy has helped to shift the culture of care to person-centered care focused on quality of life! Second, this shift to a palliative approach that focuses on quality of life AND does not preclude active treatment choices often depends on Family Doctors and their primary care teams. Hsien Seow and colleagues in their paper Building Palliative Care Capacity for Generalist Providers in the Community: Results From the Capaciti Pilot Education Program point out that "While home- and community-based palliative care can be effectively delivered by primary care providers including physicians, nurses, social workers, and other allied health professionals working within interprofessional primary care teams, they often lack the appropriate training and practical support to operationalize this approach in practice." This paper presents the findings of an evaluation of the pilot program, which showed a moderate improvement in confidence across the competencies covered and an increase in the percentage of their caseload reported as requiring palliative care. These results suggest that the CAPACITI program may be a useful tool for enhancing primary care providers' skills in providing early palliative care AND helping them ensure that Canadians like Bill Zheng's mother receive the person-centered care that focuses on their quality of life that they desire. In 2019, several health care regulators in BC came together to form a multi-college public engagement initiative – the BC Public Advisory Network (BC-PAN). Creating a joint mechanism to place the public at the center of health care reflects regulatory colleges’ mandate to serve and protect the public. The BC-PAN is a way that regulatory colleges can demonstrate accountability, promote transparency, and gather meaningful public feedback to help guide their work. Check out BC-PAN’s impact here: https://lnkd.in/dujYJz3u

Although it's always somewhat grating listening to your own voice, I think this is a great extra episode of Not A Consultation with Paul Parsons and Caroline Latta, and a great overview of the upcoming new regulations for major service change. Well worth a quick listen! #servicechange #nhs #transformation #reconfiguration #change #healthcare #commissioning #scrutiny #localgovernment
'I'm trying to think of it as an opportunity for commissioners and scrutiny members to work more closely together at earlier developmental stages of these proposals so that the need for a referral power, regardless of whether or not it's there, is significantly reduced. But that asks as many questions as it answers...' We recently did a blog on the Health and Care Act new regulations and how they might affect the role of local government scrutiny (you can read it here: https://lnkd.in/dpigMqmZ). In a special bonus episode of Not a Consultation, Caroline, Paul and our senior consultant, Jonny, discuss these changes further and how they might affect service change programmes. They've got some tips for managing what's coming too. Listen below: it's useful! https://lnkd.in/d8yVKhx7

A must-read for all medical laboratories. In particular: “The agency’s economic analysis shows that the benefits would outweigh the costs of the rule” due to the regulation and removal of ineffective tests. My fear is that FDA-level oversight will be a burden for small labs and that innovation will be stifled due to the increased hurdles for submission and review. Medical laboratories must ensure they have competent personnel and effective validations to protect patients - this is the responsibility and ethical burden of the owner and a qualified, experienced CLIA medical director.
Today, we announced a proposed rule aimed at helping to ensure the safety & effectiveness of lab-developed tests, which are used in a growing number of health care decisions and for which concerns have been raised for many years. https://lnkd.in/eRb4QAhR
