33% of children in the UK live in households which cannot afford to stay warm, dry, clean and fed, according to the latest Joseph Rowntree report. That number has almost doubled since their last study in 2019. How can we expect a child who is lacking food, heating, clothing, toiletries, or more, to be able to concentrate on their homework? To be actively engaging with research into future opportunities? To be optimistic about their own prospects, in a way that empowers them to reach out and grab what they want in life? Times are rough for many people at the moment, nobody can deny that. But please, if you can, take a look at the organisations near you who are supporting families in need, and see if you can support them in any way. In Leeds, some of these include: https://zarach.org/ - delivering beds, bedding and basic essentials to children https://lnkd.in/enBPYs4r - supports children to develop self-belief and social skills https://lnkd.in/eUg3YJRh - supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Leeds https://www.hamara.org.uk/ - supporting the communities of South Leeds https://lnkd.in/eNNmcz2M - providing children aged 7-11 with relaxing, fun holidays at Lineham Farm https://lnkd.in/e5P4GtME - supporting 16-25 year olds with support, advice, shower facilities and counselling #socialimpact #societyandculture #leeds #poverty #charitysupport

Education can break the cycle of poverty and give children a brighter future, yet 1 in 10 children worldwide are currently out of school. Street Child is working to change that. First, we ensure that children are safe, especially from risks that keep them from accessing an education. Then we get children back into school by supporting enrolment and livelihoods for their families. Finally, we improve the quality of education so that children can actually learn when they're at school! Corporate partners are critical to our work, enabling us to reach more children in need. Why HOME? Here are 5 reasons HOME is the best option for kids: 1. Scripture and academia agree: children develop best in families. 2. Once kids age out of care, they can struggle to reintegrate into communities. Without family, this is extremely difficult. 3. There are 8 million kids in institutions. There are 100 million kids living on the streets. If organizations repurpose to better serve kids on the streets and getting them home, we can reduce these numbers! 4. Poverty is a leading cause for family separation. Families that want to be together, should be able to be together, and given the opportunity to do so. 5. It is healthier and more cost effective to support a child in a family than it is to support a child in a residential setting.

Decades of underinvestment have led to 1 in every 52 children in Blackpool being in care. Every one of these children will become more likely to experience the trauma of the criminal justice system. 1000s of women who have experienced the trauma of child removal. This is what happens when cuts to prevention are combined with appalling levels of child poverty. It's unacceptable that the direction of a child's life in England has become so heavily linked to where they are born. It has to change. https://buff.ly/4b2k10D #regionalinequality #careexperience #childremoval #blackpool #north #prevention #socialcare

Did you know that research suggests that free school meals boost school attendance? SO AMAZING 😍 Free School Meals are a great investment in the future of our children, our economy and our country. So many local councils have already taken action to extend free school meal support, but there are still 900,000 children living in poverty and not able to access #FreeSchoolMeals. We know the Government has the POWER to act for children everywhere. That's why we are calling on Gillian Keegan to extend free school meals to all primary and secondary school children who need them. ⏰ Take action today: https://bb2030.co/6zi4 #FeedTheFuture #CostOfLivingCrisis #ChildHealth #UKSchools #Teachers #SchoolFood #UKPolitics

Children, the most vulnerable in society, deserve utmost protection and an opportunity to thrive. We emphasize education as a primary means to break the cycle of poverty that affects society. Quality education empowers children. It equips them with the knowledge and skills to break free from the clutches of poverty. It is a pathway toward a brighter and more prosperous future. By championing child right and advocating for an access to education, we pave the way for a society that nurtures and uplifts these little ones. Together, we can eradicate the barriers that shackle children to poverty, while ensuring a future where every child's potential is recognized and nurtured. #DoTheRight #TeachTheRight #RightTheRight

Talking to children about the other side of winter... You may have seen some of our recent winter themed blog posts that celebrate the beauty of this cold and dark season; it’s a quiet, calm and joyful time. However, we know that for many families across the U.K. the harsh reality of winter is far removed from the twinkling, snowy scenes we might associate with the season. With more and more families living in poverty, how do we address this in our classrooms in a sensitive and empathetic way? We have put together a list of books that can help you approach this tricky topic in a way that will help children to understand and process it. There are stories that reflect families where daily life is a struggle, stories of hope and determination, and books that encourage children to think about world issues. These conversations can be incredibly powerful and a way to help children learn about themselves and the world around them. https://lnkd.in/e2gfTMJ6
