Last night, the Brazilian Congress approved a significant step towards supporting our local film industry by reinstating the quota for local productions. Instead of specifying a fixed number of days, it emphasizes a minimum number of sessions and a diverse range of titles. These specifics will be determined by future executive decree. What's crucial is that the regulation is designed to ensure "variety, diversity, balanced competition, and effective presence" of Brazilian feature films in high-demand sessions. This is a move towards a more dynamic and inclusive film landscape. As we look ahead, questions arise about how this will play out. With no screen limit per movie, mechanisms must be implemented to guarantee that local productions receive fair and favorable programming. This development marks a positive stride for our local film industry, and I'm eager to see how it unfolds. Let's keep supporting and celebrating Brazilian cinema! 🎥🍿 #BrazilianCinema #SupportLocalFilms #FilmIndustry #PositiveChange #cinema #distribution #filmbusiness

Can DocuWest Also Become DocuWeek in Denver? How "Cool" Would That Be? Dear Documentary Lovers and/or Those Who are Doc Curious, The 14th edition of DocuWest takes place this week October 19-21. As Denver's first, and only, documentary film festival. Do you think Denver's newly elected mayor will proclaim it DocuWeek? Likely not. As we didn't ask. But we will. 'Cause we are all about films, fun, innovation and giving back to community. Plus, it'll make a pretty doggone good week of non narrative stories. Oh, here's our pitch: "Mayor Johnson, DocuWest is produced by our recently formed nonprofit the Denver Documentary Society. And, while we acknowledge at present, it's not likely we can meet the attendance figures of our city's other great nonprofits. We are on the rise. Heading into year three, Denverdocsoc will continue to differentiate itself by working to become one of MovieMakers 25 Coolest Festivals in the (freakin') entire world. And, while we admit our it make take a minute to prime the pump. We are here to tell ya that while nice. Meow Wolf & Casa Bonita are not cool (and are way overpriced - even for tourist traps). It is also a gentrified crime that Denver's gay bathouse, Lake Steam Baths is now a spa. Because that was grrrity cool and film folks would've dug that. So let's get real. Denver needs more flair. With three solid programs in place: screenings, an education program & partnership w/ DPS, AND an award-winning civil rights filmmaking production joint (right here in our ol' dusty cowtown). How about "Your Honor" proclaim the third week in October DocuWeek? It would be another great way to engage the city with a big ol' dose of reality. How Cool would that be?"

I provide African film industry intelligence and strategic consultation, with news, project tracking, data, expert insights, and analysis on various aspects of the film sector across African countries.
#Amsterdam: In numbers, the 2023 IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) 2023 — the world's largest documentary festival. Almost 50% of all the films in the selection come from non-Western countries. The 7.6% representation of African documentaries aligns with a previous Akoroko discussion about an emerging generation of African documentary filmmakers. (see: Documenting Africa: A Report on the Continent's Emerging Documentary Landscape: https://lnkd.in/gMx86dSU) On one hand, it could be seen as a positive sign, reflecting ongoing efforts and the growth within the African documentary filmmaking community. On the other, the 7.6% representation might also highlight that there's still a considerable way to go in achieving higher visibility and recognition for African documentaries on such prestigious global platforms. Overall, it's a positive indication of the growing international nature of the documentary film industry and a step towards a more diversified and inclusive global narrative. #IDFA2023 runs Nov. 8-19. I will cover it.

The African film industry has made significant strides in recent years, but there's still a long way to go. The lack of experimentation and risk-taking is stifling creativity and holding us back from producing films that truly resonate with global audiences. We need to challenge ourselves to tell more nuanced, complex, and visually stunning stories that showcase the depth and diversity of African experiences. The comfort zone is a seductive trap, and it's easy to get stuck in it. But complacency is the enemy of progress. By embracing new ideas, techniques, and collaborations, we can elevate the standard of African filmmaking and make a lasting impact on the global cinematic landscape. So, let's take a step back and assess our approach. Are we merely replicating the same formulas and styles, or are we pushing the envelope and exploring new frontiers? Are we prioritizing artistic expression over commercial success, or are we sacrificing creativity for the sake of box office returns? It's time to break free from the comfort zone and challenge the norm. Let's collaborate with international filmmakers, experiment with new genres and styles, and invest in innovative storytelling techniques. Let's create films that not only entertain but also educate, inspire, and challenge our audiences. The future of African cinema depends on our willingness to take risks and push the boundaries. So, let's do it. Let's challenge the status quo and create a new wave of African films that will be remembered for generations. #filmmaking #Africanfilms #Africanstories #Africancinema #Africanfilmindustry

To mark the beginning of the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) let’s talk about #accessibility. Films like all pastimes, are not only a way for people to relax after a long day, but a social activity that brings people together for entertainment. However, the theatre is a place where people with disabilities can experience exclusivity due to inaccessibility. For instance, in addition to being a visual medium, films rely heavily on sound to convey the story, the emotions viewers are to feel. But not everyone has perfect hearing. Some have minor, moderate or severe hearing loss. As a result they rely heavily on the existence of captions. While captioned films exist especially in the international film market, the existence of captions directly on the screen is not as common in North America. Especially in Canada where theatres are more likely to use CaptiView machine as an alternative. After all not everyone like captions and there are technical problems with it. However, these machines are not perfect. If we are to continue to use these archaic machines, there should be a major upgrade in the technology. https://lnkd.in/gJsVJKa5 #captions #films #hearingloss

A letter from the UK Doc Film Council signed by many UK doc makers noting that doc filmmaking in the UK is facing an "existential threat." The letter goes on: “Production funding for independent docs is chronically low and support for development, let alone distribution and exhibition, is practically non-existent. Sustaining careers in these conditions is all but impossible aside for a relatively privileged few, which has direct implications for filmmaker wellbeing and the docs sector’s devastating lack of diversity.” The good news aspect of this is that it is from an organization formed last year to help deal with this threat: the UK Doc Film Council. It received government funding in the UK to do so. Govt funding for this is unlikely in the US but I would suggest that it is time for organizations and philanthropists with interests in this area to do something similar here (and I'm looking to be involved in these initiatives). These new entities then need to connect on a global level. The tech giants are certainly functioning on a global level.
