How many US blockbusters and mid-tier films were on release in Europe in 2022 and how much lower was that number when compared to the past decade? How important are US blockbusters and mid-tier films for the European box office markets, i.e., which share of admissions is generated by these films? These are some of the questions addressed by the brand new Observatory report "An analysis of European box office structure 2010-2022", which analyses for the first time the composition of the European box office in terms of four film types: blockbusters, high-grossing films, mid-tier films and low-grossing films. #cinema #film #europe
Almost 70% of admissions to European films stemmed from low-grossing and mid-tier films in 2022

By selectively favouring certain films, programmers can demonstrate to others that they hold the power to grant favours, thereby creating a self-sustaining system influence. This dynamic not only undermines the integrity of the film selection process but also discourages merit-based recognition, leading to a homogenized and less innovative film landscape. https://lnkd.in/g2AVRY39

How do we get people to not use toilet paper sourced from the boreal forest? "Many major toilet paper brands – most notably, Procter & Gamble’s Charmin – are made almost exclusively from virgin pulp from climate-critical, centuries-old forests in the Canadian boreal. The boreal forest is essential in the fight against climate change, holding more than 300 billion tons of climate-altering carbon." Let's stop buying any toilet paper made from trees. Period. Who Gives a Crap is made from recycled content and so is Natural Value which is also made in the US. See Michael's The Issue with Tissue film if you can. It really highlights everything wrong with clearcutting age-old forests for wiping our butts. It's very sad. National Short Film Day The significance of short films often goes ignored, necessitating the establishment of National Short Film Day to address this issue. Observed annually on December 28th, this day memorializes the first public screening of a commercial short film that occurred on the same date in 1895. The purpose of this particular day is to pay respect to the craft of short films and acknowledge the individuals who create them. The inception of short films dates back to 1895, when brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière created a device capable of recording dynamic visuals onto film. The silent films rapidly acquired popularity as audiences became amazed by their capacity to convey stories simply through images. Today is a day dedicated to acknowledging and valuing the originality, creativity: and influence that short films contribute to the world of cinema. The process typically includes screenings, talks, and events aimed at highlighting the variety and skill present in the domain of short films. National Short Film Day acts as a chance to honour the unique form of cinematic expression by showcasing developing filmmakers and acknowledging the significance of storytelling.

SPI’s study findings on the international performance of Dutch feature films were presented at the Netherlands Film Festival on 23rd September 2023. The independent study, commissioned by the Nederlands Filmfonds, sought to understand the current gaps as to why Dutch feature films are not reaching their highest performance potential. SPI conducted a two-phase study, first benchmarking the artistic and market performance of Dutch feature films against those in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, and Sweden, and second, qualitatively analysing the factors influencing these performances. KM 82 WON BEST SHORT FILM AT ECHO MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL IN MACEDONIA Indigenous Voices Win Today & They Were Heard. Here's what the jury has to say: "Explanation of the winner "KM 82: The Porter Voices of Peru's Camino Inca" Choosing just one movie out of a total of 30 is really not an easy task. But at the same time, it was a pleasure to watch 30 short films, dedicated to the mountain, to nature and to what we forget less, which is man's primordial relationship with it. From there, the pleasure turned into an honor, when we had to be a jury and choose the best short film at this year's edition of the ECHO Mountain Film Festival. The jury consisting of Jakov Poposki, Rade Gogoski and I, Lidija Mojsovska, decided on a story, that is, on the film that we believe carries the strongest story and the most socially engaged message. It is the film KM 82: The Porter Voices of Peru's Camino Inca, by director Marinel de Jesus. For us, without wanting to diminish the value of other films, this was a story whose heart and pain truly comes from the mountain. For the people who, fighting for their existence, keep within themselves the priceless value of the mountain and were born there to convey the secret of the Incas to all well-intentioned visitors from all over the world. But at what price and is it worth it, is exactly the message that this inspiring story conveys to us. The same path that leads to the great civilization of the Incas, for the protagonists in this story, is a path to their dehumanization. This film, despite the obstacle of being filmed to the end, manages to convey a socially engaged message. This alarming cry of the descendants of the Incas who try to exist exploited and in almost no conditions can be the voice of all exploited workers in the world."
