Call it whatever you want - but do consider "fractional" jobs as a way to meet organizational needs by leveraging the expertise of senior-level talent who wants to work part-time. For just shy of a decade I have been consulting part-time while navigating the demands of the "sandwich generation" phase of my life. *** Now that I'm no longer "sandwiched" I'm eager to jump back into a full-time role - please keep sending those leads & introductions. *** As a consultant, I certainly did my share of training, coaching & facilitation. That was OK, sometimes great. Yet two of my clients - You Can Vote and North Carolina Center for Nonprofits - used me in roles that closely resemble the "fractional" model: providing what Jeanne Canina Tedrow often referred to as "bench support" to fill important roles requiring a high level of expertise. That work was more satisfying, because it allowed me to flex my talents in more impactful ways. There are downsides to part-time, high-level work, to be sure: witness the exploitation of adjunct professors in our nation's higher education sector, for starters. But for some top talent, fractional work is far better than any other option out there. Many of my most accomplished GenX & Y peers are still not even close to retirement but, for various reasons, would love to have the option of utilizing their talents in a fractional role. I'd love to see more opportunities for all of them to contribute at the level at which they're capable in contexts other than full-time jobs.

I spoke to 9 recruiters in March who offered me freelance projects. I took the time to listen to each of them. But not a single recruiter had the courtesy to get back to me.
