Every time you talk of the present with Black people, the response is the past. So if I say, Black people are the only group that dives head first into a Minstrel Show, I have to hear about slavery. Why can’t Black unite under the fact everyone else thinks less of us? Slavery. Why can’t all the Black professionals unite to employ one another? Slavery. Why do Black people believe white people are going to give up any power, to provide opportunities. Delusion. Often I’m left to think, the memo of how Black people believe their words mean more than, their dollar or time spent working for others, went to my spam. We don’t like it, but we know what Black jobs are. MBTA entry level employers is a Black job, if you’re clueless look at the staff. You know what’s not a Black job? The presidency. If you’re clueless look at the list of presidents. It’s comical how people will get up an arms over titles but, careless about the reality. If you’re not going to impact someone’s dollar or, step in the ring with them, you might as well be two birds yelling at one another, because you will get the same results. #linkedin #blackjobs #poc #work #ceo #ai #economy

Ready to Stop People Pleasing? Set Empowered Boundaries Tired of over-giving under pressure, undervaluing your needs? You’re not alone, sis! As high achievers, we morph into yes-women, politely spreading ourselves thin to please everyone while leaving no energy for us. But conforming to unrealistic expectations helps no one in the long run. And self-care should never feel selfish. We must pivot from polite pushover to purposeful game changer by setting boundaries. So why do we people please anyway? Cultural conditioning rewards going above and beyond. Yet disapproving gaze also follows Black women seen as aggressive or self-interested. Internalized guilt makes us default to caretaker mode. Sis, you deserve care AND career. Affirm: I matter. I have a right to take up space. I will set empowered boundaries from self-love, not anger or apologies. Start small by asking for what you need from a place of grace. Claim your no without negativity. What limiting narrative could you conquer this week? You’ve got this!

Don’t put on that face... It was a rough week, one you didn’t think would go that way. We all have those weeks at times. Weeks that you can’t control what is happening! What does beating yourself up with something that happened help you with? It doesn’t help at all. But wait, Listen, You were authentic, You did your level best, Many people are proud of what you are doing. Don’t feel like you haven’t done enough, of course you have. It’s okay to make mistakes At times, all doesn’t end. Stop getting overwhelmed, Just know you did your best. You were great. And I don’t want you to lose that spotlight. Because your spotlight isn’t the same as someone’s else. Your dedication to working, Learning, And going beyond is a plus. Now,  Breathe in…… Focus on yourself, The achievements you met this week. Then, Breathe out…… Letting go of the negativity in your mind, And all the bad energy you felt. You are a Lioness! Affirm this when looking in the mirror. And remember, you are a strong Lioness! 100,000 🎉😱🪩 As of yesterday, here on LinkedIn I have 100k “followers” (aka virtual friends, hope it’s ok if I call you that). But how? I could dive into the specifics of what kinds of posts tend to resonate the most and how often I get on here and all that. But I’d rather talk about Why I’m here as a presence on LinkedIN, today. The Why has kept me going despite fatigue and trolling and busy-ness and so on. I’m here on LinkedIN because of my sweet friend Marisa, who took her life in college and we didn’t know she was struggling. I think about her when I post encouragement to college-age and early-career folks. I’m here because in August of 2020 I was in rooms with white hiring leaders who said things like “we just need to hire more Black people” (as a knee-jerk, optical move IMHO), and when I asked “why couldn’t you retain the Black talent you already had?”, I was met with silence. I’m here because I’ve too been often the only woman in the room when we are making hiring decisions here in the tech world. I’m here because I can’t take 1:1 calls with job seekers anymore. 1, I don’t have the time on my calendar. 2, I was in therapy weekly to deal with how traumatic it was to be taking those calls in my off-hours; listening to one person after another sob to me on the phone and I couldn’t do much to help them… but I can post the same advice I was giving 1:1 here. Always free. After how much I have been given and privileged, I can’t imagine charging people who are in a vulnerable position. Plus, sharing help here on LinkedIN is more efficient, helps people at a large scale, and it preserves my mental health. I also get to make genuine connections with folks, am constantly learning about the market and about YOU, and occasionally it’s fun around here. Thank you, LinkedIn friends, for being here with me. I’m calling out Black professionals & entrepreneurs in this one! So many times when you come to work with me and we sit down together in our Cultural Download meeting and I ask: Who is the ideal person you want to work with? I get this avatar that is so vague it describes no one. But once I dig a little deeper I often discover that the person you really want to work with looks like you, has had experiences like you, and is someone you don’t have to code-switch around.But you struggle to claim it. I get it, it’s a struggle of mine too.You’re afraid of the backlash, of excluding others, specifically whiteness because all of our lives we’ve been taught to center it. And I’m here to tell you you are allowed to exclude it. Not everyone is allowed in your space, to claim your time, to get your services. By being true to yourself and voicing who you want to work with, you’re making the world a better place. Why? You’re making it easier for your ideal person to find you and benefit from your services. "I was literally erased, literally erased out of that company. And I got fired by my own husband because I found out what was really going on...” Sheila Johnson's journey to becoming the first Black female billionaire is a powerful story of resilience, determination, and the strength found in vulnerability. Her struggles highlight the sacrifices and challenges women often endure, prioritizing the needs of others while facing their own battles in silence. ✳ Her Story ✳ - Moved 13 times in her childhood, instilling resilience and adaptability at an early age. Her father, one of the first African American neurosurgeons, could only practice in Black hospitals, forcing frequent moves. - Unconventional background: She majored in music at the University of Illinois; her creativity and persistence drove her to break barriers and carve her own path. - In 1979, Sheila co-founded BET with her then-husband. Starting with a $15,000 loan, they filled a media gap for Black audiences, overcoming skepticism and financial challenges with their vision. - As a Black woman in media, Sheila faced prejudice from investors. Her perseverance and strategic partnerships proved skeptics wrong and led BET to success. - Sheila's 30-year marriage included infidelity and professional erasure. Much of her struggles during this time she hid due to her desire to protect her husband and her race from criticism. Her resilience through these personal challenges highlighted her strength and determination. - BET's acquisition by Viacom in 2001 for $3 billion made Sheila Johnson the first Black female billionaire. Her strategic vision was key to this monumental achievement.
