AAIC’s Africa-focussed fund reaches $87 million Africa Asia Investment and Consulting (AAIC) has announced fresh investment into its Africa Healthcare Fund 2 (AHF2), bringing the total for its two health-focussed funds to $87 million USD. Backers include the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ), QR Investment, and TOPPAN Holdings. AAIC was founded in 2013, and launched the first Africa-focussed fund in 2017 with the aim of supporting growth-stage technology companies in the healthcare sector. To date, their portfolio includes Kenya’s MyDawa, and Nigeria’s Helium Health. Another look at the top disclosed deals out of Tunisia in 2023. This year, North African tech startups have attracted $397 million USD in funding, over 40 rounds. Majority of this (97%), going to Egyptian technology companies. Source: #DisruptAfrica

Despite a slower start in 2024, African startups continue to showcase resilience and innovation. According to data from Africa: The Big Deal, January witnessed $83 million raised across 31 disclosed deals—a notable drop from the previous year's $545.1 million. However, diving deeper into the numbers reveals an 84.8% YoY decline. Key Insights: - Agritech, Cleantech, and Healthtech lead in funding, with $26.3M, $18.1M, and $13.5M respectively. - Logistics startups from North Africa, particularly Egypt, are gaining traction. - Regional breakdown: North Africa leads with $25.1M, followed by East Africa and West Africa. - Funding Winter: Investors prioritize startups with proven track records. Top 5 Disclosed Deals: 1️⃣ Nigeria-based cleantech Nithio: $10M raise. 2️⃣ Kenyan agritech Apollo Agriculture: $10M raise from Swedfund and ImpactConnect. 3️⃣ Egyptian healthtech Yodawy: $10M raise. 4️⃣ AgDevCo and IDh Farm Fit: $9.5M investment in agritech Hatch Africa. 5️⃣ Kenya-based cleantech SunKing: $7M unsecured loan from Lendable.
