September 11th will always be a date that makes people say, "I remember where I was." I certainly do - it's a day that changed the world and shaped my views of it. When unthinkable tragedies occur, strong people take decisive action. I've known many who joined the military in the aftermath of 9/11. Most who served our country with honor came back needing our support. Far too few found the support they needed. Tens of thousands of warriors have died by suicide since returning from overseas, several times more than died in the course of their duties. In the face of this new tragedy, the best among us have again stepped up (again) to create safety nets. Leaders like Michael Bloch with VETWERX, and the great team at Boulder Crest Foundation, have a vision for how to heal our heroes through "post-traumatic growth." Through their priceless work of guiding veterans and their families to "struggle well," they are healing communities and reversing trends, one life at a time. Last Thursday, I had a chance to volunteer at Boulder Crest for a few hours with fellow The Official Leadership Loudoun alumni, ahead of the Bluemont, VA, center's 10th anniversary celebration. Our work was focused on weeding the Hero Garden and walking paths, polishing light covers, and setting up tables and chairs under their big lawn tent. No detail or service is too small for the warriors and families that Boulder Crest serves. For me, it was an opportunity to zoom out on the last 22 years, as well as zoom in on how I can help move forward. So much about September 11th is too big to wrap our heads around. I didn't join the military or become a first responder. So much about suicide and mental health is too stigmatized to talk about. I'm not qualified to provide medical care. But I can and should help. One weed at a time, one chair at a time, we create space for people to heal. Thank you to Boulder Crest and VETWERX for the big work that they do to Never Forget (and thanks to Leadership Loudoun for living their mission in the community). https://lnkd.in/e6vfgvSG #neverforget #911 #september11 #volunteer #communityservice #service #giveback

Happy Warrior Wednesday, everyone! As we move through Military Appreciation Month, it’s the perfect time to truly reflect on and celebrate the incredible dedication and bravery of our service members and their families. This month isn’t just about recognition; it’s a heartfelt thank you to those who have given so much to ensure our freedoms. Why Military Appreciation Month Matters: 1. Honor the Sacrifices: From the long deployments to the missed family moments, our troops make countless sacrifices. This month, we’re taking extra time to acknowledge and thank them for these selfless acts. 2. Support for Military Families: Behind every service member is a family that serves in their own way. Let’s make sure we’re also supporting the spouses and kids who keep things running at home. 3. Get Involved Locally: Check out the parades, memorial services, and community events happening this month. Whether you’re attending or volunteering, it’s a great way to show your support. 4. Educate and Share Stories: Use this month as a chance to spread the word about the military’s vital role and the personal stories of those who serve. Whether it’s through social media or in conversations at school or work, every story told is another layer of appreciation. 5. Shop Military-Owned Businesses: Let’s give back by supporting businesses run by veterans and military spouses. It’s a small way to uplift those who’ve already given so much. A Personal Note from Next Move Military: Here at Next Move Military, our commitment to supporting military members extends far beyond just this month. We’re here all year round, helping military families find, settle into their new homes and integrate into their communities, making transitions as smooth as possible. This Military Appreciation Month, let’s make a real effort to show our gratitude. Reach out to someone you know who serves or has served, and simply say thank you. It’s a small gesture that can make a big impact.

This was taken from a friend of mine... If you have a Combat Veteran in your family and you don’t like their moods and behavior around the holidays; please consider these six things: 1.) Your combat veteran has served in countries where people are blessed to receive a tattered pair of shoes or have clean water to drink; he/she no longer lives the “first world illusion” and no longer cares that if you buy one play station you can get a second one for fifty percent off. In fact, they find it hard to appreciate any of the gluttonous commercialism and overindulgence that permeates American holidays. Standing watch, boring as it was, had so much more purpose than going to the mall. 2.) Your Combat Veteran is thankful for the most basic things; not thankful for mega-sales and million dollar parades. They are thankful to be alive; thankful to have survived both the wars far away and the wars they struggle with inside. 3.) Your Combat Veteran is thankful that it wasn't them that got killed, but their celebrations are forever complicated by guilt and loss over those that were. Some of the most thankful times in their life were some of the scariest. Their feelings of thanks and celebration often conjure memories that are equally painful. 4.) Your Combat Veteran is not like you anymore. At some point, for some period of time, their entire life boiled down to just three simple things: when will I eat today, when will I sleep today, and who will I have to kill or will try to kill me today? They are not like you anymore. 5.) Your Combat Veteran does not need a guilt-trip or a lecture; they already feel detached in their grief while others so easily embrace the joy of the season. They need understanding and space; empathy not sympathy. 6.) Your Combat Veteran does love his/her family and is thankful for the many blessings in their life…and they are thankful for you. Give back to a Combat Veteran by donating to The Unheard 22 initiative.

I can’t golf—not even a little bit. But sometimes, it’s not about us. On top of that, there's something refreshing and powerful about giving back. Deep down, we probably all know this. But sometimes we need a reminder. I did. Participating in this year’s 18 FORE MILITARY FAMILIES Golf Tournament was the reminder I needed. Here are some quick thoughts/reminders on the impact of giving: 1️⃣ For the Giver: Giving cultivates a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It opens our hearts, broadens our perspectives, and lets us become part of something greater than ourselves. It reminds us of our own blessings and encourages gratitude for what we have. 2️⃣ For the Recipient: For those on the receiving end, acts of kindness can be life-changing. Whether it's access to education, medical assistance, or basic necessities—charitable contributions provide essential support to those in need. They instill hope, restore dignity, and empower people to overcome challenges and build a brighter future. 3️⃣ For Society: Giving fosters a sense of unity and compassion. It brings people together, encourages collaboration, and builds bridges across diverse backgrounds. It's a powerful reminder that we are all in this together.

Today we celebrate MLK Day, a day in which we remember the values for which Dr. King lived, and for which he died. But it’s important that we do more than just remember, or even celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. We must make MLK Day one in which we deliver on Dr. King’s dreams of transformative love, uncompromising compassion, and selfless service. Dr. King once said, “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.” Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter, participating in a community cleanup, or simply reaching out to a neighbor in need, every small effort adds up to create a ripple effect of positive change. Imagine this: instead of treating MLK Day as a day off, we turn it into a day on—on for making a difference, on for creating connections, and on for building bridges. It doesn't have to be grand or elaborate; even the smallest gestures can have a profound impact. #MLK #celebration #blacklivesmatter #mlkday #dayofservice

The Strategic Veteran | Veterans Transforming Veterans | Host of The Strategic Veteran Podcast |Director of Recruiting QRFup
Dear Friends and Fellow Veterans, As we approach Memorial Day, there's something I feel compelled to share. This day is more than just the unofficial start of summer or a long weekend spent barbecuing and enjoying the outdoors. It's about remembering. Reflect back on the oath you took when you decided to serve. You pledged your life to a cause bigger than yourself. And, you weren't alone. Countless members of our community have experienced this profound connection, a sense of singular purpose that surpasses any other. When we transition out of service, it's as if we've suddenly lost that purpose. That guiding light that once illuminated our path seems to fade. It's a unique form of loss, one that can feel overwhelming and all-consuming. However, when the uniform comes off, the service doesn't have to end. We need to remember that our commitment to serve, to contribute to something more profound than our individual selves, doesn't simply disappear. This Memorial Day, whether you're grilling in your backyard or spending time with your family, I implore you to take a moment. Remember those who have fallen in service to our great nation. Remember your time in service, the trials and triumphs, the camaraderie and the hardships. But, more than that, remember your purpose. Remember that you were built to serve, to answer a call greater than yourself. This is our collective legacy. And it's a purpose we can continue to pursue, in various ways, long after our time in uniform ends. What does service beyond the uniform look like for you? Is it mentoring the next generation, launching a venture that helps others, or finding another way to make a positive impact? Regardless of your path, remember you're not alone. We are all navigating this journey together, linked by a shared history, a shared purpose, and a shared commitment to service. Let's honor those who have given everything on this Memorial Day - not just by remembering them, but by living out the purpose they died for. What does your purpose look like today? How are you continuing to serve? #MemorialDay #VeteranTransition #LifeAfterService #SharedPurpose
