Coinciding with the Garba beats (Folk dance) revering "Divine Mother or #MAA; during #Navrathri "Nine Nights" a festival that is celebrated with pomp in India. #TheMotherInYou resonates with each and every one of us, it is in fact #genderagnostic, #ageagnostic and #parousagnostic (whether or not person has had conceived or delivered a baby). If you would ask me Why so? Well #MaternalOrMotherly instincts and love aren’t just human, they’re mammalian. Can never forget this report from the Center for Whale Research was the ordeal of J35 (an orca) carrying her dead calf for at least seventeen days and over a 1,000 miles. The story connects to any one of us #MotherInYou who has lost a family member, and that is why people around the world were feeling sad for her. It was so easy to empathize with her for what she was going through as observed by a marine mammal intelligence specialist. A mother’s, Father's or any one's instinct to carry her/his/A baby away from danger is similar across species Whales, Mice, Elephants, Bats #TheMotherInUs. Why did I choose to story a #Whale, well undoubtedly it is one of the largest mammals and an enamoring example of #MotherlyInstincts. Vividly remember the #Whale in the #LifeOfPi and #Nowhere where they play their role to perfection on #Reel too. This takes me back to my time at sea on the #WhaleWatch trip off the #BostonNantucketcoast, #ASightToFreezeInMemory #ABucketList to tick off and but more so #ToKindleTheMotherInMe. We’re diving into some data this #CitSciFri! The #SAFMCRelease project works with fishermen who use the free app #SciFish to record information about their released shallow water grouper and red snapper. The data they provide help us to better understand what they see on the water every day. We hear from folks that they’re experiencing a lot of shark depredation. One of the things fishermen can do through SAFMC Release is tell us when this happens. Last year, they noted shark depredation on 4% of their releases. You may have seen this footage of a reported great white shark swimming of the coast of Ireland. It remains anecdotal evidence as the footage quality is short and poor so it can’t verify that it is or it isn’t a great white, and where exactly it was filmed. The quality of the footage had led people to say it’s a hoax as well. I’m obviously not an expert in sharks but there are some in Ireland that this potential sighting has excited and it might be legit. Dr Nick Payne of Trinity College is collaborating with Shark Scientists from the US on a upcoming joint survey. They will hopefully track great whites to see if they actually visit our waters and obtain evidence of it. Sharks are very important in regulating the marine food web, although this importance has been overwhelmed by fear generated through the media.
