The Cosmic Crisp apple is my favorite for a lot of reasons. It’s got a great sweet yet tart flavor and is super crunchy and juicy. It doesn’t brown quickly making it an obvious choice for lunches and snack trays / charcuterie boards.
But there’s more to the Cosmic Crisp story. I think we could do a better job telling the ESG / sustainability benefits of this variety:
- Cosmic Crisp has a high yield per acre - high yields = more opportunities to be efficient with growing inputs including water, fuel, and labor.
- Cosmic Crisp ripens at a high pressure (PSI) making it more able to withstand the picking, transit, storage, and packing process than some other popular varieties.
- More net apples grown make it through the retail process. Reduced distribution waste = more efficient use of distribution inputs and reduced retailer cost.
The Cosmic Crisp apple is a win for the grower, a win for the packer, a win for the retailer, and a win for the person that gets the privilege of eating it.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to leave them on the tree as I drive by or walk rows. The Cosmic Crisp apples we grow look like Christmas ornaments. Seeing these gems and knowing they need a bit more time on the tree is testing my patience.
