Do beards actually break the seal of gas masks? Thanks for sharing David Rosa. "They may have anecdotal evidence of 1 to 5 people who they see fail the fit test, but that can’t be extrapolated to hundreds of thousands of airmen.” For decades, U.S. military leaders have prohibited service members from growing beards, arguing that facial hair not only disrupts a clean, professional appearance, but also interferes with the seal of a gas mask, oxygen mask or other devices that service members wear to survive hazardous environments. While many military leaders defending the beard prohibition have repeated the claim that beards break gas mask seals, one Air Force doctor has found no direct scientific evidence to support it. I don't think this is something new it's been known for sometime. The report highlights that the UK Armed Forces are currently equipped with sufficient readiness for operations, enabling them to fulfill standing and contingent commitments. Positive. However, the breadth of these commitments is straining budgets, constraining training opportunities, and impacting personnel retention. known known Additionally, the report acknowledges the existence of potential challenges or threats on the horizon, metaphorically described as "storm clouds," indicating the need for preparedness and proactive measures. known unknown. main recommendations: 1. Addressing the strain on budgets caused by extensive commitments to alleviate constraints on training and personnel retention. known known. 2. Prioritising the development of warfighting readiness to ensure preparedness for potential future challenges or threats. known known. 3. Implementing proactive measures to address potential challenges or threats indicated by the metaphorical "storm clouds" on the horizon. known unknown. definition of readiness: The report defines readiness as the capability of the UK Armed Forces to carry out standing operations and contingent commitments effectively. This includes being adequately prepared, equipped, and trained to fulfill operational tasks as required. see the first point. UK Armed forces are currently equipped for sufficient readiness for operations.
The report on Armed Forces Readiness has been published and I can’t say it makes for enjoyable reading. I suspect for a large number of my military colleagues this will bring many long-standing frustrations (and realities) into public consciousness and awareness more than before 😕

This project snuck up on me. It emerged from some notes I had put together a few years ago, plus some research I started last fall. In part, the catalyst was the general gloom around the condition and future of the U.S. Air Force that I sensed working on a major project last summer. Because the situation is not good. It’s not defense critics like POGO calling the Air Force fighter force “geriatric“ or suggesting that it is in a “death spiral“. It’s the insiders, the in-the-loop experts. It’s people with service experience, hearing from today’s operators about the real news from bases in the U.S. and overseas, unplanned events such as F-15s being struck from active service because of aging issues, resulting in a drawdown of deployed forces. And the problem is almost entirely due to the F-35 being late. The final delivery to the USAF is due (or was due, until the latest disruptions) in 2052. The plan 22 years ago was for that to happen in 2027. This book is a detailed study of why that happened. https://lnkd.in/gCrckHUg https://lnkd.in/g_wEYmFv

Got it. Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes is in deep trouble. Self-inflicted wounds at highest levels of leadership. Zero political support from either major party. Recruitment failing to fill ranks and retaining qualified and capable Armed Forces members difficult with promising opportunities out of uniform. So let's stop beating a dead horse and start working on solving the problem. There are no #SilverBullet solutions and miracles won't happen overnight. However #leadership with a big L, focus on people and not stopgap measures, acting on family support and reducing the handicap long term commitments demanded of personnel will all help to fix the problems. Our allies are also struggling with the same issues and in many cases have tried the same measures which failed in the past. Look at this generation and address their very real concerns or don't be surprised when they pass on joining the military. https://lnkd.in/gmwpRtW8

Sheer volume of personnel is important and necessary in large-scale conflict. But men and women with ‘special’ skills is rare and should be retained at all costs. SOF Truth 3: “Special Operations Forces cannot be mass produced. It takes years to train operational units to the level of proficiency needed to accomplish difficult and specialized SOF missions…” #nationalsecurity #training #response
The most likely combat is irregular warfare. The Army may cut its lead forces for that kind of fight.
