Thank you Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights for this remarkable graduation that comes at a time of sadness and grieve for me. Here some parts of my speech
Dear Professors, Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and fellow graduates,
Today, as I stand before you, I cannot help but reflect on the profound impact that armed conflicts have had on my life. Born and raised in a region prone to armed conflicts, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of those conflicts on innocent civilians, especially women and children. It is with a heavy heart and a determined spirit that I share my thoughts with you on this occasion.
During chaos and destruction, where violence engulfs every aspect of daily life, it is fundamental to recall that civilians must be always protected. The victims are not faceless statistics; they are real people, individuals, just like me, here in front of you… we harbor dreams, aspirations, and a will to survive.
Civilians suffer mostly at the hands of armed conflicts, often becoming victims of indiscriminate attacks, displacement, and untold suffering.
In wars, it is crucial to cast a focused spotlight on one group that endures particular hardship - girls.
Ladies and gentlemen,
As a Palestinian woman, born and raised under Occupation, education has always been a beacon of hope for me and my peers. Throughout history, education has proven to be an unstoppable force, empowering individuals to overcome adversity, break down barriers, and transform societies.
However, in conflict zones, girls are often denied access to education, and deprived of their fundamental right to learn, grow, and shape their own destinies.
Education is not just a means to enhance knowledge but also a powerful tool for breaking cycles of violence and discrimination.
I speak to your hearts before your minds
As we move forward, as graduates ready to embark on our respective journeys, let us never forget the faces of those affected by armed conflicts. Let their struggles fuel our determination to build a world where civilians are shielded from harm and where every girl, regardless of her circumstances, has access to education.
We are not numbers. We have names to remember.
