According to the March of Dimes, 10.6% of birthing people in Iowa received no or inadequate prenatal care in 2023, less than the U.S. rate of 14.8%. However, 11.3% of all births in Iowa occurred in maternity care deserts, increasing the risk of complications for the birthing parents and babies. This is EXACTLY what we are addressing at Transformed Birth Services! So proud of our team and the work we have done to bridge these gaps. --> "Since birthing people of color and birthing people who are low-income face barriers when it comes to receiving equitable perinatal and postpartum health care, doulas with lived experience and/or similar backgrounds can understand the challenges or concerns their clients experience and provide relevant support and even advocacy in the clinical setting." Our doulas not only understand their clients, we are improving health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gkKyXb_s

Join us today in St. Louis for an imperative discussion on maternal child health, led by the 124th President, Dr. Yolanda Lawson. With a heart deeply invested in the welfare of others and an unwavering commitment to making a difference, Dr. Lawson will share invaluable insights and data that highlight the critical need for this discussion. 📊 Why We're Here: * The United States faces alarming maternal and infant health outcomes, ranking poorly among OECD nations. * Missouri has received a D- in preterm birth rates, with 11.3% of babies born preterm in 2022, surpassing the national rate. * Infant mortality rates for Black birthing people have risen sharply, nearly doubling the overall state rate. * Implementing equitable, preventative, and early prenatal care is crucial to mitigating these disparities and improving birth outcomes. Today is a step forward in our relentless pursuit to end health disparities. Let’s come together to support Dr. Lawson’s mission and advocate for the health of mothers and their children. #MaternalHealth #InfantHealth #HealthEquity #DrYolandaLawson #StLouisEvent #AdvocacyInAction

March 29 to April 5 is Community-Based Doula Week! Community-based doulas remove barriers to services by meeting families where they are physically and emotionally before, during, and after birth. In addition, community-based doulas address maternal health disparities, helping to create positive childbirth experiences and working towards improved birth and infant health outcomes. Across the United States, maternal health disparities and mortality rates continue to increase, particularly for Black and Brown birthing people and infants. In South Carolina, birthing people experience pregnancy-related deaths 47% higher than the national average. This is a national health crisis that must be addressed immediately. We believe community-based doulas are lifelines for families and one of the missing links to addressing this critical issue. Find out more about community doula week here: https://lnkd.in/ercmAJzA

The maternal and infant mortality crisis feels impossible to shift. But with intentional and transformative approaches - we can address policies and practices that contribute to the disparities in birth outcomes for Black and Brown, as well as uninsured mothers. Check out the toolkit below.
Last week, the National Governors Association released Tackling The Maternal And Infant Health Crisis: A Governor’s Playbook, a guide with 32 policy recommendations designed to make transformational change in a system that has historically failed our nation’s mothers and babies, especially among Black, Hispanic and American Indian and Alaskan Native communities. The Playbook is a toolkit for immediate and long-term action to address the significant discriminatory policies and practices embedded in organizational structures that lead to disparities in maternal health outcomes. Please check out the Playbook below. Boldly Go is excited to join other powerful opportunities to change outcomes for families by partnering with philanthropists and the government to center voices of community. Our deepest thanks to the National Governors Association team, Governor Murphy and First Lady Murphy, and our colleagues at Afton Bloom. Shout out to Rebecca Alderfer, Alexandra Geertz, Abigail Grider-Reiff, Hannah Claire Reyes, Kyle Peterson, and Lindsay Broyhill for their work on this playbook.

Professor of public health advancing a new science of thriving to promote child, family and community flourishing
Celebrating all mothers on Maternal Health Day today! Research tells us that when mothers and caregivers feel supported, they can better meet their child's needs and foster their healthy development. However, national survey data reveals disparities in emotional support across income-levels: Among lower-income families, only 61.4% had someone to turn to for emotional support, whereas among higher-income families, 85.1% reported having someone they could turn to. We call on all child and family advocates and providers to explore your state's data and prioritize the possibilities to support mothers on #MaternalHealthAwarenessDay!: https://lnkd.in/eWg2K39n #NSCH2022 #maternalhealth #childhealth #familyhealth #healthequity
