At its core, the base rate – also known as the benchmark interest rate or bank rate – is the interest rate set by a country’s central bank. It is the rate at which the central bank lends money to commercial banks, and it serves as a foundational reference point for all other interest rates in the economy. Commercial banks, taking their cue from the base rate, adjust their own interest rates for customers.
