Gorgeous angles of the 21C chassis! Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS), including their generative design – and many more – software tools, is a testament to looking at problems through different lenses. Castings and heavy, metal welded assemblies in automobiles are expensive, laborious to manufacture, and require massive, specialized, and dedicated facilities. By looking at discretizing nearly every metal component of the car with baseline constraints like 3D printer build volume, Czinger was able to derisk and spread – what I’m sure initially were high AM costs – across a component set that no one had yet looked at in its entirety. It was a stoke of genius to rework the tooling cost problem and change the way automobiles are manufactured, and the results are incredible – performance records being set, lightweighting to die for, and history-book-level designs that will stand the test of time. This process of releasing the sexy, market entry anchor product, followed by higher volume, lower cost products – which I imagine is in the works – is also intriguing. We have our own playbook here in the polymer, composite, and metamaterial space at Firestorm with different print processes and serving different markets, but I love following what other incredible companies like Divergent are doing – truly inspirational!
