Fascinating and sobering tour at Bow Lake's Recycling and Transfer Station. The nearby landfill will be completely full by 2040, and there is no room for an additional landfill in Kings County Washington. It highlights the absolute critical need to reduce, reuse and recycle. Landfill and Recycling is very regionally based. Crowded areas like the Seattle region are needing to look for solutions such as improved recycling, incinerating trash or trucking it else where. While areas in Nevada and Oregon have land and can sustain ongoing landfill practices. Even though not all regional areas are in dire need for change, we ALL need to be a part of this process, since it affects our whole country and our whole world. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend A&WMA Lake Michigan States Section’s event to hear Anthony Daniel Tindall share Cook County’s 5-year waste reduction plan. A few key points that I picked up on: 🚮 8 lbs of trash are thrown away every day by an average household. 🚫 At the rate we’re going, the landfill dedicated to Cook County’s trash is expected to reach its capacity in 5 years. 🥯 20% of the trash that ends up in landfills is food scraps so a huge focus must be on providing compositing services. ♻️ The recycling rate in Cook County is 18%, with a diversion rate of 27%. It’s easy to be pessimistic and a nay-sayer about these issues when you’ve seen how difficult it is and how long it takes to make changes, but it’s possible. While we have a long way to go, I have been extremely lucky to have met individuals who are ready and excited to take on this work. Over the last 3 years, I have seen more refill stores around the city, a bigger push to bring your own containers and bags, and more organizations such as my own, EcoShip NFP, and Reduce Waste Chicago take on hard-to-recycle items and provide recycling and reuse solutions. I look forward to this 5-year plan and how we can be a part of it.

Most Fridays we conduct a Zoom networking session (called Harbak Matters) where we invite three unrelated guests to chat about the market.  The 30-minute discussion includes topics such as recycling infrastructure, current struggles with the implementation of the circular economy, government funding, alternative funding models and community engagement. This quote from Margaret Mead is what Vani Murthy (Wormrani on Insta, TEDx speaker, composting enthusiast, urban farmer and an abundantly energetic person) closed with when she spoke about what we can do in our individual capacity as we think of World Environment Day. While she spoke about many things ranging from avoiding single use plastic, waste segregation, recycling and more, her talk on home composting stood out for me very strongly. After a failed attempt, I am going to try once more. Mostly because of what Vani said. 🍃 Magic: In her words, “Composting is magic. It connects me with nature. Every time I compost, I feel I’m paying my rent to stay on this planet.” 🍃 Acceptance: When I accept that all 'creepy crawly' is part of the ecosystem, I would be able to stop fussing around. I can't ask for a walk in the beautiful forest without anything creeping or crawling in there. 🍃 Persistence: As with everything else, perfecting the art of home composting may demand several attempts. If I'm grounded in the 'why' behind what I am doing, I will keep trying.
