I just had the opportunity to read through “The State of Platforms” report by Scott Brinker, Asher Mathew, Jay McBain and Kelly Sarabyn, which brings to the table data and insights on the platform business model from the 50 largest software companies. I was quite impressed with this report – not only it painted a good picture on the size of platform ecosystems from these companies, but it touched on the hot topics of services marketplaces and how app marketplaces are monetized. It also included a number of relevant perspectives from different software companies for further context. One of the topics addressed, dear to my heart, was the size of partnership teams and reporting structure… one of the insights that I most appreciated as a partnership leader, was that while the current ratio of sales to partner teams sits at 7:1 across these 50 largest players, as companies become larger, the percentage of employees that are dedicated to the partner business gets even bigger – a clear indication that investing in partnership teams pays off! #stateofplatforms Partnership Leaders www.stateofplatforms.com

Doing some deep work on our marketplace strategy at Liminal this morning and revisiting the #stateofplatforms report I contributed to via Partnership Leaders alongside several esteemed industry leaders. An ecosystem approach is critical in today's SaaS landscape, and figuring out your role within it and aligning where and how you will partner is an important first step. There is a ton of wisdom packed into this report, highly recommend checking it out: https://lnkd.in/eXx8DJA4 According to Tackle.io's recent State of the Cloud GTM Report, revenue flowing through the Cloud Marketplaces is expected to radically increase from $15B in 2023 to more than $100B in 2026, more than 6x in just three years. If you haven't worked out how you are going to operate and thrive in the hyperscaler marketplaces, it's time to get started. We are building from scratch, and my approach is to 1/ start the journey with the marketplace and partner team on which our product is built; 2/ invest in the marketplace ecosystem that aligns with our target market and ICP; and 3/ think about the various GTM strategies of each provider ("come one, come all" vs "curated & selective") and how it fits in with your company's GTM strategy. After considering all of these factors at Liminal, we are leaning in hard with Google Cloud to start of our marketplace journey and build out this (one!) part of our ecosystem strategy. Being at an early stage startup presents so many opportunities to make critical strategy decisions... and then iterate, pivot, adapt and execute!
