Join the FEMA Mitigation Planning team for the "How Hazard Mitigation and Water Resource Planning Flow Together" webinar on May 9. Mitigation planning and water resource programs share common goals. However, they often exist in silos. By integrating program efforts, you can build resilience. When planners and water resource managers work together, they can advance community priorities, reduce disaster risk and safeguard vital water resources. Mitigation and water resource planning can flow together in many ways. Knowing when and where to coordinate is crucial. This webinar will help you navigate the challenges and opportunities of cross-sector planning. Hear about two separate efforts, their benefits within a community and how to streamline work and create cost-effective solutions. Meet Zachary Merino, a Program Delivery Manager in our Recovery Division's Public Assistance Program. Since joining FEMA in 2019, he feels fortunate to have the opportunity to help communities rebuild after a disaster. “I would like people to know that there are other aspects of FEMA beyond just the immediate response, and that we work a lot on the back end. It’s mostly paperwork, but it’s still very important. We obligate a lot of funds to our state partners and help them rebuild after a disaster.” Thank you for following along this month as we shared about FEMA's Public Assistance Program in Region 10. Feel free to review our previous posts to learn more about FEMA’s largest grant program.

FEMA released the tribal disaster recovery video series to support #tribes throughout the disaster declaration process. FEMA developed these videos in partnership with tribal emergency managers and FEMA tribal liaisons in response to tribal partners' requests for products that better explain FEMA's disaster declaration process. "FEMA programs are a partnership from beginning to end," said FEMA Region 10 Administrator Willie G. Nunn. "We worked together with tribal emergency managers to create a product that supports tribal nations in a way that meets their communities' needs." FEMA's programs can be complex and this tool along with FEMA's disaster declaration process card supports Tribal Nations throughout the disaster declaration process. On September 7, 2020, Malden, Washington experienced one of several devastating wildfires in Washington State between September 1-19. The Babb Fire destroyed 80% of Malden’s structures, including the city’s fire station, post office, community hall, and maintenance building. The critical infrastructure loss greatly affected the rural community of 230 people. Through FEMA's Public Assistance Program, Malden was awarded $4.2 million to construct two multi-use buildings to replace the four destroyed buildings. One building houses the town hall, post office, and fire station. The other building will serve the community as a library, food bank, and community gathering area. Join us throughout June as we spotlight FEMA's Public Assistance Program in Region 10!
