Being INCLUSIVE is the second attribute in the SIRVACE model. It feels even more relevant sharing this today as the debate continues around "forced" return to workplaces. Why is it important? Being Inclusive contributes to: 🚀 improved performance 🚀 better employee satisfaction 🚀 longer term business success How do you develop it? 🌿 Practice self-reflection to understand your own biases, values and areas for improvement 🌿 Develop your listening skills - that means listening without interruption and asking clarifying questions 🌿 Find a Mentor - someone who you admire for their fair and inclusive approach 🌿 Create a thinking environment - you'll get better ideas in less time and everyone feels involved and included (check out Nancy Kline "Time to Think") You can choose one from the list or decide to do them all. Systemic thinking is an approach that views complex entities as interconnected and interdependent systems rather than isolated parts. It involves understanding how individual elements within a system influence one another and how they collectively contribute to the behavior and outcomes of the whole system. This perspective emphasizes the importance of recognizing patterns, relationships, and feedback loops, rather than just focusing on linear cause-and-effect chains. Systemic thinking encourages a holistic view, promoting solutions that consider the broader context and long-term impacts, thereby enabling more effective and sustainable decision-making in dynamic and complex environments. Including systemic thinking in a company's culture involves fostering an environment where employees are encouraged to understand and appreciate the interconnectedness of various elements within the organization. Yesterday, we sat down with Hebba Youssef to dig into what a great culture actually means. Inspired by a blog series that she wrote last year, Hebba chatted through the 5 factors she believes impact culture. There was loads of insightful stuff packed into an hour, but here are a few of our takeaways from the discussion: 🔴 If your leaders are bad, your company culture is going to suffer. If you have a problem at the leadership level, you have to resolve that before you can actually build a great culture. Hebba mentioned that HR has to gain the trust of leadership. A lot of times leaders don’t know that what they’re doing is toxic and just need to be told. 🔴 As a whole, we focus too much on productivity and not enough on the humans in front of us. There’s a difference between recognition and appreciation, and part of your culture should have a strategy for both of them. 🔴 When it comes to measuring culture, it’s not just about performance reviews and engagement surveys, but it’s also observation skills. Metrics and data are great, but your observations as an HR person will tell you what the culture is. Inspired by “Designing Regenerative Cultures” by Daniel Wahl, 2016, this exercise challenges us to pay attention to how we think and create our beliefs. 🚀 Why It Matters: Often, we engage in discussions about culture, only to find certain decision-makers dismiss the need for culture work. They might say, “Our culture is great – we don't need this!” But have you noticed how their perspective differs from others in the organization? 🔍 The Insight: It's a recurring theme in organizations seeking culture evolution. Those at the top might not be fully aware of the challenges others are facing. They could be disconnected, not truly listening, or even viewing their team through a different lens. 🌱 The Ladder of Inference: This exercise prompts us to explore how we climb the ladder of assumptions, select information, draw conclusions, and form beliefs.
