Why I Believe Everyone Should Have a Portfolio As a Product Designer, my portfolio is my pride and joy. It’s where I showcase my journey, my successes, and even my challenges. But lately, I’ve been thinking: why should portfolios be limited to just visually driven careers like UX/UI design? No matter your field, having a portfolio can be a game-changer. Here’s why I think everyone should have one: 1. Showcases Your Achievements: A portfolio is a living, breathing record of what you’ve accomplished. Whether you’re in project management, marketing, finance, or any other field, it highlights your contributions and growth in a way that a resume just can’t. 2. Demonstrates Skills and Competence: Listing skills on a resume is one thing, but a portfolio brings them to life. Through case studies, reports, presentations, and client testimonials, you provide concrete evidence of your expertise. 3. Tells Your Unique Story: Your portfolio is more than just a collection of work; it’s a narrative of your professional journey. It gives potential employers or clients a deeper understanding of who you are, what you’ve done, and how you think. 4. Stands Out in the Job Market: In a sea of resumes, a portfolio can set you apart. It shows you go the extra mile to present your work and gives a detailed look at what you bring to the table. 5. I've been sending out applications for 2 months now, and I've only managed to land 1 interview! Considering how competitive the job market is, I expected more responses by now. People often say you need to stand out from the crowd, but I've always struggled with that concept. How can I create my own brand when I lack experience? 🤔 Back in university, studying architecture, I remember admiring my professors' sketches. Each had their own unique style, while my work felt like a chaotic jumble. When I graduated, I compared my final design project with one I had received an F on. It was then that I realized it was time to start crafting my own brand (not that I was an expert, but there was potential). 🎨 With this mindset, I doubted I could achieve the same in UX design, as I hadn't studied it at university. However, stumbling upon Ricardo Brito and watching Chris Do's videos on personal branding completely shifted my perspective! While senior designers may develop their branding more quickly and intricately, it doesn't mean juniors can't do the same. Now, I'm scribbling a single word in my notebook and underlining it three times: "STORYTELLING." I have some experience, a mindset, and I've journeyed to reach this point. 3 types of goals you should create as a junior designer in a new role or your first design job 👇 1. Learning goals: What do you want to learn about the company, product and users? e.g. "Learn about competitors, their value propositions and document it" 2. Initiative goals: What do you want to accomplish in product design efforts? e.g. "Conduct audit of product, present findings to upper management, get buy-in to create improvement initiatives out of findings" 3. Personal goals: What are you going to accomplish in your role, with the team & with the org? e.g. "Own design initiatives end-to-end, improve speed of delivery" Contrary opinion: Instead of waiting to be given these goals, write them down and set a meeting with your manager.
