That’s it, we’ve just wrapped up the last ‘Leading Newsroom Change’ course of this academic year. It was wonderful to end with a cohort of 8 smart women leaders. From September to today, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism hosted 230 news leaders from 49 countries across our multiple programmes. It’s a privilege to get to learn from so many who are shaping the present and future of our industry. We are facing complicated challenges, but there is power in getting together to share insights and learn from each other. A special thank you to my team, who makes all of this possible behind the scenes.

In an era dominated by constant streams of information, it's crucial to recognize the powerful role the media plays in shaping our views. Media outlets, with their ability to frame stories and set agendas, hold the key to influencing public opinion. However, this influence comes with a caveat – the potential for misinformation. From selective reporting to the perpetuation of biases, media outlets can inadvertently alter our understanding of events. It's essential to approach information with a critical eye, recognizing that not all narratives are neutral. By cultivating media literacy, we empower ourselves to distinguish between fact and fiction. Let's actively seek diverse perspectives, question framing, and be wary of sensationalism. Together, we can navigate the media landscape and foster a more informed and discerning society. #MediaLiteracy #InformationAge #CriticalThinking

CEO, She's4Sports | Sports Executive | WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award winner | Chief Digital Marketer and Storyteller
A few months ago, two different Black women who are in non manager roles asked to speak with me to learn how I navigated my career to work in senior management roles. They shared they were frustrated because they out worked their white peers and successfully completed work deliverables but never got promoted. As a Black woman who has worked in the corporate world for twenty years, I felt their pain and frustration. I remember my second job in communications at a company where I was a communications specialist and delivering on all my projects. I even developed the company’s first e-newsletter. A white employee joined the team with less experience than me and within a short while they promoted her into a manager position and asked me to train her. 🤔 I’ve seen it time and time again in my career, Black women are held back, told we aren’t ready, asked to take more training, given contracts or secondments instead of full time work etc. Unfortunately, I had to honestly tell these young women that I don’t have a perfect answer on how they can get promoted because I’m still figuring it out myself. One thing that has helped me is starting my own company She's4Sports and using that to show my business management and leadership experience. To my Black colleagues, let me know in the comments, how you’ve navigated promotions. #workforce #corporateculture

Cocoa Girl magazine founder, Serlina Boyd, has launched the Cocoa School of Journalism and Creative Arts. Feeling disillusioned with the lack of representation in journalism and the creative industries, Boyd was moved to do something to challenge it. She said: “It’s the statistics that got me. They are quite shocking and I feel that there need to be more journalists telling our stories. “According to the Sutton Trust, 80% of editors went to private school; only 11% of journalists are from working-class backgrounds, and a measly 0.2% of journalists are Black.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/extxiVJQ #DEI #Diversity #Leadership #DiverseLeaders #Creativity #Storytelling #Legacy #NextGeneration ----- Recently discovered our page? Despite the potential for counter-hegemonic challenges, media institutions have the capacity to shape public discourse and maintain the status quo through their strategic control over information dissemination. By critically evaluating the concept of media hegemony and examining the ways in which media institutions perpetuate dominant ideologies and power structures, we can gain a deeper understanding of the role of media in society and its implications for shaping public opinion and influencing societal norms. #concept of media hegemony
