During their ten weeks with us, our summer interns have the opportunity to learn all about the SF Fed. And there is a lot to learn! With four branch offices, a state-of-the-art cash processing center plus our headquarters in San Francisco, the SF Fed is a big organization, one that is responsible for an equally sizable region. Our district – the Twelfth – is by geography the largest in the entire Federal Reserve System. The people who live in the nine states, two territories, and one commonwealth of our district earn more than a quarter of the country’s personal income. To help our interns navigate such a large organization, we pair them with a bank buddy. The buddies help answer questions about their new roles and even offer professional advice. Our bank buddy network is one of the ways we deliver a unique, personal experience for our interns.

I am excited as I reflect on the exhilarating 8-week adventure I've just completed at Lloyd's Banking Group. 🚀🌐 My internship was a dive into the world of liquidity management and settlement schemes via my school project, the insights gained were beyond expectation! 💡💰 Within the initial month, I immersed myself in the intricacies of Real Time Gross Settlement (#RTGS) and Deferred Net Settlement schemes (#DNS) The significance of #SWIFT messages in the settlement process fascinated me. Engaging with 10 thought leaders across various locations broadened my understanding of payment flow intricacies, while data became a trusted ally. 📊🔍 My focus sharpened on two crucial fronts: 1. Payment Throughput 2. Liquidity Management Armed with tools like Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, PowerPoint, and Word, I ventured into the world of complex data analysis. 📈💼 Post rigorous research, intensive data analysis, and enlightening interviews, I presented findings and recommendations. The response was heartening, yet my quest for depth led me to consider year-to-date analysis. Here, I encountered Excel's limitations, only to turn the challenge into an innovation. Directly connecting data storage to PowerBI brought about automation, simplification, and newfound efficiency. 🔄📊 PowerBI unearthed fresh insights that fortified compliance and liquidity strategies. These findings evolved into my second proposal, embraced by my managers for further action. The journey's rewards were not just academic but transformative, revolutionizing payment reporting processes. 📈🚀 This journey would've been incomplete without the exceptional guidance of my manager, David Potter, the support of Deb Clews, Samantha Emery and the invaluable opportunities provided by 10,000 Black Interns and Lloyds Banking Group. Gratitude to my school Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University for their unwavering support throughout. 🙌🏽💫 With immense pride, I'm excited to march forward, equipped with insights, skills, and connections forged during this remarkable voyage. Here's to growth, learning, and the exciting road ahead! 🚀

A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk to one of Bloomberg's Summer Intern classes of 2023. I told them about the time a decade ago when I was an intern on the Sales & Trading Floor of UBS Investment Bank. I had taken finance and economics classes at school but there was nothing like the real life experience of the complexity (and ingenuity) of finance in the real world. Sitting with traders, salespeople and product structurers was the first time that I learned in-depth about structured derivative products and financial engineering. Combinations of bond investments and creative derivative overlays to create complex payoffs engineered for investors desires and views on capital protection, leverage, yield enhancement and correlation. To prepare for the talk and bring real life examples, I read Lawrence Galitz's book: "The Financial Times Handbook of Financial Engineering: Using Derivatives to Manage Risk". From futures, forwards, swaps, options and credit default swaps to basis trades, capped notes, path-dependent range accruals and digital payoffs - this book is extremely well written with solid examples of why and when investors might put on different trades. If you're interested in derivative markets, you won't find a better apprenticeship than this book. If you were one of the interns in that talk, this book is an excellent compliment to your academic studies. Good luck and all the best Intern Class of 2023! #bloomberg #financialtimes #intern2023 #financialengineering #structuredproducts #derivatives #banking #finance https://lnkd.in/ebbRBkeP

Meet Tyriah Callwood! "Growing up I remember listening to my parents tell me about the importance of financial security. I saw firsthand the impact of drowning in debt and before I knew what debt was, I was taught not to be in it. While watching my parents struggle to make ends meet for a family of 6, I always knew I wanted to help but was never sure how to. My family like many other families struggled with financial literacy. My love for finance started as a wide-eyed high school freshman at 15. At that time, I had begun my very first internship as a student teller for a local credit union in my hometown Jacksonville, Florida. Through a partnership with my high school, I offered financial services to my peers, many of which had just entered the workforce. I watched them cash their first checks and helped them open their first checking accounts, some even getting their first auto loans. Having the privilege to share in these monumental moments developed my passion for helping people in the areas that matter most, their finances. While in college, I took my experience on to lead financial literacy lectures for audiences ranging from elementary school students to college graduates. Seeing their faces light up in excitement as I spoke time and time again reassured me that this is the way I want to bring value to the world around me. My next internship as a freshman in college is what helped to pivot my transition to Fidelity Investments! While here, I've been able to meet and share ideas with some of the most amazing leaders and colleagues. Most importantly, I've been able to help my family find solutions to help improve their financial lives. My career goals and aspirations have been poured into in ways I could once only dream of. As a Relationship Manager, every day that I help bring financial security to others gives me the same joy and excitement I first felt long ago." College Major: Business Finance Previous Industries: Financial Services Fidelity Title: Relationship Manager #WomensHistoryMonth #FidelityAssociate

Sad this was the last Intern Networking event for my internship with Zions Bancorporation. I have learned a lot more about the banking/finance industry than before. An outlook, data needs to be constantly gathered and sifted through, never settle for old data. #zionsbanker #intern2023 #dataanalytics
I've told a few people that I'm in denial that today is August. I'm also in denial that it was the last of our intern networking events for the summer. These events have been so fun to organize alongside my talented colleague Lizette M.! Today we were joined by Robert Spendlove, Senior Vice President, Economic and Public Policy Officer for Zions Bank. As someone who loves NPR's Marketplace but has never taken an economics class, I was fascinated by Robert's presentation. He discussed various economic indicators and how the data is sending mixed messages. In some regards, the economic outlook is very good: low unemployment, relatively good job creation, and improving consumer confidence. But other indicators, such as inflation and tightening credit conditions could determine what kind of "landing" the Federal Reserve will achieve. While the economic tea leaves are complicated to read, I loved how Robert mentioned that our region is well-positioned to weather economic uncertainty. Over the last year, many industries (especially leisure and hospitality) have experienced health payroll growth. Also, our very low unemployment and a large influx of newcomers to the state make for a very positive economic picture moving forward. We are so grateful to Robert for taking time to present to our interns in today's fascinating session. This summer has been filled with so many opportunities for our interns to network with Bank leadership. Our executives' strong support for this program demonstrates how Zions invests in the next generation of banking leaders. The school year is almost upon us, and we're getting ready to recruit amazing intern talent for summer 2024! I'm excited to keep bringing the best talent possible to Zions! #ZionsBanker
