CEO & Co-Founder Diversity and Ability | Co-founder & Director of Zaytoun CiC Palestine FairTrade | Trustee for Disability Rights UK (He/Him) Shaw Trust Judge.Power 100 / Social Change Campaigner / Father for a future
.. ‘ Business without Bullshit ‘ I truly appreciate your words, Darren Coan. There is so much solidarity in people wanting to work and sit with these realities. Whenever campaigning, I find myself & the Diversity and Ability team fighting ableism by intensely digging deep to address attitudinal barriers. We do this with unrelenting passion. But in truth, it can be lonely when campaigning for large organisations we want to work with and support. It comes at a Mental risk to ourselves to expose such gaps to places of Power. Sometimes, in the loneliness, I find a part of myself ‘playing small’ to accommodate the socially acceptable version where corporations/ institutions decide ‘they want’ the dial to be . Often, there is a preference for performative diversity ‘HR speak’, i.e. reactive deficit model of disability inclusion and a ‘celebration of paternalism’ rather than inclusion through intersectional understandings, strengths and simple ‘everyday belonging’. It can hurt more than I can say. But every so often, I realise that in amongst all the inheritance of social ‘n’ structural barriers & ableism, there is also a hidden commitment. Some golden people have their own vision for a fairer world. They may not have a disabled lived experience, but they share life struggles and wishes with the same urgency and hopes as mine. When actioned with sincerity, this is what allyship can truly look like. This helps me rebuild 'me' and our work every time. When it comes to changing the narrative on #Disability, I am more an #advocate than an #activist. Both have equal value and at times I have leaned to being the activist and the advocate. Social injustice needs the activists among us to make a noise and be seen and to force the conversation. However, it can be divide people into different camps and force people to entrench into their beliefs and polarise opinions. This week I listened to a podcast that interviewed Celia Chartres-Aris (née Hensman) Business Without Bullshit and in the past her joint podcast with Jamie Shields on Unlearning Ableism (something I would recommend downloading. Celia had many fair comments to make on why isn't #Ableism treated in the same way as other forms of discrimination. Ableism is ingrained into our language and I know I have used it without thinking in the past and will do in future (not on purpose) without thinking. When I do use Ableist language I take the opportunity to learn from it and it helps reset some of my unconscious biases. Colleagues at work are open to being educated and to unlearning their language. Often when they are being #Ableist it comes from a place of care and not ill feeling. I don't want to punish someone who is willing to unlearn or learn to be better, but I do support those that are being consciously Ableist and their are laws against that. I want to keep seeing Activists such as Celia, Jamie, Isaac Harvey MBE, Simon Houghton and Atif Choudhury making waves and I want to see Advocates like myself posting and moving the needle and #Allies resharing

Let's amplify the voices of those who are often marginalized and advocate for positive change. At NJ Recovery & Wellness, we stand for a world where justice knows no bounds, and every person, regardless of background, can enjoy their rights and freedoms. A human rights-based approach is essential to promote awareness and advocacy. To empower marginalized groups, Civil Society and human rights bodies must identify and educate them on their rights and help them claim them. For persons with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ individuals, community awareness is crucial as they face exclusion and discrimination in their communities, including in education, employment, and healthcare. These marginalized groups also face barriers to accessing formal financial services such as banking, savings accounts, and credit. Adequate financing for disability-relevant services and support is critical to ensure that these individuals have an equal opportunity to participate in society. Let's continue working towards a world where everyone's rights are respected and protected. #HumanRights #Equality #DiversityandInclusion

Navigating a world that's not built for everyone is hard. It's true that you'll face resistance if you - belong to a marginalized community - live in a marginalized body (disabled, dealing with chronic illness, or plus sized, or all of the three) you will face resistance. Bullying is real. Even in grown-up spaces. Discrimination is still very real. Equity, equality, accessibility, and acceptance are still things we are fighting for. All of it shouldn't stop you from - being visible - claiming your space - finding your tribe - demanding equal pay/equal treatment - commanding respect May we all thrive together! #equality #equity #inclusivity #bodyjustice #equalpay #disabilityjustice #disabilityadvocacy #sizediscrimination

This profound quote strikes at the heart of an issue that deserves our attention - the need for inclusivity and accessibility. But as we strive for a more equitable society, it's crucial that we don't look the other way. This is where Access4you comes into play. We are committed to breaking down barriers and creating a world with equal opportunities and fundamental rights.
