Federal Public Defender, Western North Carolina U.S. Marine Veteran, Brigadier General (Ret)

Come join us in our quest for justice in Western North Carolina! We are expanding and hiring two Assistant Federal Public Defenders - a trial attorney with less than 10 years’ experience in our Charlotte Trial Unit and an appellate attorney who will primarily support our trial units in Charlotte and Asheville.  Neither position requires prior federal experience. Our mission is important: We are committed to excellence and the quest for justice of the indigent accused, focusing on our client’s needs with innovation, passion, and through dynamic advocacy. Our vision is client-centered: Advocacy requires engaging with every aspect of our clients’ lives. We will defend our clients with purpose, compassion, and courage; identifying inequities that deny them of freedoms, drive their prosecutions, and inflate their sentences. We will work to reform the criminal legal system that is too often blind to these realities. We will partner with those who serve our community to help secure a future for our clients and their families. And we will strive to provide aid to and set an example for the present and future generations of our professions. We recognize that we cannot serve the distinct needs of our clients without assembling a diverse team of dedicated professionals who work and advocate collaboratively on their behalf. We welcome applicants of any race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, disability, age, and status. We are committed to ensuring an inclusive and equitable workplace. We have a terrific group of attorneys here at Federal Public Defender, Western District of North Carolina including Megan Hoffman; Nicole Lybrand; Bo King; Kelly Johnson; J.P. Davis; Taylor Goodnight; Kelly Sullivan; Steven S.; Elizabeth Blackwood; Elizabeth Gerber; Melissa Baldwin; Rhett Johnson; Teresa Norris; Danielle Smith; David Weiss; Elsa Ohman; Mark Rosenblum and others incredible attorneys. And “here” is a terrific place to be. Charlotte offers a smorgasbord (or, rather, a meat-and-three) for every enthusiasm. We have an ever-expanding network of city parks connected by 40 miles of Greenway trails. Our office is just steps away from the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center—which hosts your Broadway shows, concert dances, and festivals—and the Mint Museum Uptown and the Levine Museum of the New South. You can see the Charlotte Knights play from our office window, and you’re a short walk to Charlotte FC, who are new and exciting, and to the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets, who are neither. And don’t forget about NASCAR. (Or do; we don’t mind.). For the appellate position, you can also consider Asheville, a flourishing mountain city with an eclectic downtown, hundreds of studios and art galleries, a world-class culinary culture, a thriving live music scene, and awe-inspiring scenery and outdoor activities.
