🌍📢 The European Environment Agency has published an insightful briefing on the management of used and waste textiles in Europe’s circular economy. Key messages from the briefing include: 🔹 In 2020, the EU generated an estimated 6.95 million tonnes of textile waste — approximately 16kg per person. 🔹 82% of the total textile waste was post-consumer waste. 🔹 In over half of the EU-27 Member States, separate collection of textiles is mandatory. 🔹 Harmonising definitions and mandatory reporting on the amounts and management of used and waste textiles are crucial for setting future targets and monitoring progress towards a circular economy. Thank you for joining us for #TheCircularEconomyQuiz on a circular economy for textiles. Textile waste is a direct consequence of our linear economic system. Around the world, the vast majority of textiles leak out of the system when they are discarded: they are incinerated, landfilled, or leak into the environment. A #circulareconomy is the only solution that can match the scale of the global textile waste problem. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies play an important part in this, having the potential to go beyond downstream waste management. More on EPR policy for textiles coming soon.

🌍 Exploring Circular Economy: The Management of Used and Waste Textiles in Europe ♻️ 📢 The European Environment Agency's latest publication highlights the urgent need for improved textile waste management. With an estimated 6.95 million tonnes of textile waste generated in 2020, and only a fraction collected separately for reuse or recycling, Europe faces significant challenges. 🔑 Key recommendations include: 🔄 Scaling up recycling capacities 📊 Harmonizing definitions 📝 Mandatory reporting #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #ESSECGlobalCircularEconomyChair #TextileRecycling #EEA #EcoFriendly #GreenFuture #Reuse #Recycle #WasteManagement 🌱👗♻️ cc : Pierre-Emmanuel Saint-Esprit Justine Laurent Felix Papier https://lnkd.in/ex88Vy8X

Starting next year, EU Member States must put separate collection systems in place for textiles. The European Environment Agency’s briefing published today shows that most #textile #waste in Europe currently ends up in mixed waste and that sorting and #recycling capacity need to be urgently scaled up to ensure better and more circular use of used textiles. But first of all, it is necessary to consume less! #circulareconomy

Our new European Environment Agency briefing with underpinning report on textiles waste launched at the occasion of the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen arranged by the Global Fashion Agenda shows that: EU generated around 16 kg of textiles waste per person in 2020. Of this only 4.4 kg per person was collected with the intention of reuse and recycling while 11.6 kg per person ended in mixed household waste, which typically goes to incineration or landfill. In over half the 27 EU Member States it is now mandatory to collect textiles waste - ahead of the EU obligation to collect it by 2025. There is a risk of continued high amounts of textiles waste continue to be incinerated, landfilled or exported if sorting and recycling capacities are not scaled up. Great work for the first time giving a status of textiles waste managenent in the EU - undertaken by Sanna Due, Jana Deckers and Tom Duhoux with contributions from Daniel Montalvo Almut Reichel EU João Costa myself and others. https://lnkd.in/d2SG7Hss

The industry responsible for sorting discarded textiles for reuse and recycling is on the brink of collapse across Europe. If textiles can no longer be collected and sorted in Europe, all industry efforts to create a sustainable textile value chain in a circular economy would be in vain. Here's why👇 🎙️The prospect of incineration becoming the only remaining option if sorting discarded textiles becomes financially unviable is deeply alarming, says Mariska Boer, the President of EuRIC's Textiles Branch. ♻️ How is Textile waste managed in Europe's circular economy? 🧵 The Waste Framework Directive (WFD) mandates that from 2025, EU Member States must establish separate collection systems for used textiles. This briefing, by the European Environment Agency, provides an overview of the current state of textile waste generation, collection systems, treatment capacity and the different classifications for used textiles in Europe. 🌐 You can find out more at this link: https://lnkd.in/ex88Vy8X 📝 This briefing is underpinned by a report from the European Environment Agency’s European Topic Centre on Circular Economy and Resource Use (ETC CE), written by Jana Deckers and Tom Duhoux. FROM WASTE TO RESOURCE. EU’S NEW TEXTILE COLLECTION REGULATIONS Starting in 2025, EU member states will be required to collect used textiles separately as part of the European Waste Framework Directive. The European Environment Agency's recent report sheds light on the current state of textile waste and the need for standardized definitions and innovative recycling technologies. Find out more in our latest article “European textile-waste strategy: separate, recycle, reuse” which is part of our new "waste or wasted?" series. https://lnkd.in/duRDNFKY What happens to textiles after they have been disposed of? And how can textile waste management be integrated into a circular economy? In our "Waste or wasted?" series, we present the current situation regarding the handling of textile waste and present solutions for counteracting this detrimental trend. #TexpertiseNetwork #TexpertiseEconogy #TextileWaste #CircularEconomy #EEA #TextileRecycling #EURegulations #GreenFuture

19 EU Member States will struggle to meet the 50% plastic packaging recycling target in 2025. Is mixed waste sorting the key to meeting future goals? ⬇️ Mixed Waste Sorting (MWS) is a solution for recovering recyclable materials before residual waste is incinerated or landfilled. It uses field-proven technology to extract materials like plastic, metal, textiles and paper from the residual waste stream and reduces GHG emissions from waste incineration. Plastic packaging recycling rates vary widely across the 27 EU Member States. For countries that do not have effective separate collection systems in place, MWS could prove an essential recovery backstop. Zero Waste Europe concluded in a recent report that a full roll-out of effective MWS is likely to be necessary to meet the EU’s Circular Economy Objectives. You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/gr-DzihJ We also offer a variety of resources that address mixed waste sorting and its benefits. 💭 Picture a future where global CO2 emissions are cut by 60 million metric tons by 2030...all because you recycled your beverage cans. A study commissioned by Crown Holdings, Inc. and International Aluminium Institute proves this can be a reality. The study proposes 25 strategic levers to enhance recycling systems and recycling rates in Australia, Cambodia, South Korea, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. With global beverage can consumption set to increase by 50% by 2030, these advancements are critical. They'll help us maintain a circular life cycle for aluminum, preserving natural resources and reducing carbon emissions. 🌿 This study serves as a call to action for each of us to do our part in creating a greener, more circular future: https://lnkd.in/gZcG8SPg Stay tuned for more updates on our sustainability initiatives as we're guided by our purpose: People.
