Did you know that every May, we celebrate #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth to honor the rich history and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans? Like most commemorative months, it all started with a congressional resolution. 🇸 This recognition was first proposed as a week-long celebration by a dedicated California State employee, Jeanie Fung-Rees, in 1977. It then officially became a month-long celebration in 1992 through Public Law 102-450.📅 I recently read a fascinating article on Google Arts & Culture that traced the genesis of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. It revealed that the idea for this commemorative week was sparked by the U.S. bicentennial in 1976, inspiring many communities to celebrate their own cultural identities.🎉 What struck me was the tireless effort of advocates like Jeanie Fung-Rees, Frank H. H. Fujii, and countless others who worked diligently to establish and celebrate this month. It's a testament to the power of determination and the importance of acknowledging the diversity that makes us stronger.💪 As we continue to celebrate this month, let's reflect on the significant contributions of Asian Pacific Americans to our society. How have these communities influenced your life or work? And remember, acknowledging and celebrating a diverse range of heritages contributes to the cultural richness and forward progression of our societies. 🌏 #CelebrateDiversity #AsianPacificAmericanHeritage #CulturalHeritage #Inclusion

🌟 Honoring Diversity: Celebrating Jewish American and Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month 🌟 May holds a special place in our hearts as it marks not just one, but two significant celebrations: Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It's a time when our household is brimming with pride, joy, and a profound sense of connection to our diverse roots. This month, both of our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) will be hosting an event, commemorating the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our society. These celebrations aren't just about tradition; they're about fostering understanding, respect, and solidarity among all communities. However, this year feels different. It's impossible to ignore the alarming surge in antisemitism, a deeply concerning trend that demands our attention and action. As we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month, it's crucial to acknowledge the reality of this hatred and create safe spaces. In a world where discrimination and prejudice persist, it's more important than ever to stand united against bigotry in all its forms. By recognizing and amplifying the voices of Jewish Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders, we send a powerful message of inclusivity and acceptance. Let's use this month not only to honor the past achievements and contributions of these communities but also to recommit ourselves to building a future where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. Together, we can create a world where diversity is celebrated, and hate has no place. #JewishAmericanHeritageMonth #AAPIHeritageMonth #UnityInDiversity

As we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, we recognize the significance of this day in commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is a time to honor the resilience and strength of the African American community and reflect on the strides we have made towards equality and justice. However, while we celebrate this important milestone, we must also acknowledge the enduring legacy of slavery that still affects our society. The abolition of slavery was a monumental step, but the lack of a comprehensive plan for integration and support left many African Americans facing immense challenges. Today, we see the echoes of this historical oversight in ongoing struggles with job opportunities, educational disparities, and systemic racism. At PMI, we commit ourselves to addressing these issues head-on. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just principles to aspire to, but fundamental values that require active pursuit. It is our responsibility to create an environment where everyone has equal access to opportunities and is empowered to succeed. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us also reaffirm our dedication to building a more just and equitable society. Let us work together to dismantle the barriers that continue to hold back so many and strive for a future where every individual can thrive. Happy Juneteenth!

Using accurate language is essential when it comes to identity. "Asian American" is an umbrella term encompassing many diverse ethnicities. Today, this umbrella has expanded to include terms like AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders), API (Asian and Pacific Islanders), AANHPI (Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders), and APIDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi Americans). While umbrella terms are useful, they can sometimes flatten the beautiful diversity within each group. We need to consider whether these terms effectively include people of South and Southeast Asian descent, Western Asia, and the Middle East, and whether "Pacific Islander" adequately captures the realities of Native Americans from the Pacific Islands. Using terms like "API" when we only mean "Asian" can contribute to this invisibility. Let’s be careful with our language to avoid erasing and mislabeling people, experiences, and cultures. By being mindful and precise, we can promote inclusivity and understanding within the AAPI community. Educating ourselves about the diverse identities within this community is essential to creating a more inclusive society.

May is #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth, and we have Jeanie Jew to thank for it, a woman who turned her scars into a force to elevate her community. The commemoration began as a week starting on May 4th with a 1978 bill introduced by New York Congressman Frank Horton and California Representative Norman Mineta. The dates were intentionally chosen to honor the first known Japanese immigrant who arrived on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 19, 1869. The month of May was designated Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month in 1992. But the fight to be acknowledged began decades before in the mid 1970s when the former Capitol Hill staffer introduced the idea to Congressman Horton. By this point, Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Week were already declared national observations in 1976 and 1968, respectively. And Jeanie took personally the lack of recognition of Asian Americans and their contributions, as a fourth generation Chinese American whose great-grandfather had helped built the transcontinental railroad. M.Y. Lee would witness the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act which told Chinese Americans like him that they their labor wasn't enough to belong or be accepted. The community would witness in 1871 the hate-fueled Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles that left 17 men and boys dead, and those that called San Jose’s Chinatown home would see their neighborhood burned down. These are the stories that are a part of our heritage as Americans as much as are our foods and customs. “It was a time of anti-Chinese and anti-Asian sentiment,” Congressman Horton said in 1992. “The revelations about Mr. Lee and the story of Asian Americans led this one woman to believe that not only should Asians understand their own heritage, but that all Americans must know about the contributions and histories of the Asian-Pacific American experience in the United States.” Read more: https://ow.ly/IPIk50Rul6J #OurStoriesMatter #FightAsianHate #StandwithAsianAmericans Source: TIME
