"Never Be In A Hurry to Be A Department Head" When I started talking to young film makers in colleges and universities in the 90's, I would always say "Don not be in a hurry to become a department head." I used my experience assisting for 10 years under some great property masters to learn the craft as an example. Yes it is one thing to learn how to put the right props in front of the camera, but what I really learned from my mentors was: How to identify a problem long before it happens. How to stand up to bullies. How to run a safe set. How to handle firearms properly on set with very strict consistent protocols that never changed no matter what. I learned nothing happens on a set with firearms without the OK of the Property Master, or the Armourer. I learned how to demand a calm film floor from a first AD who was trying to push me to go faster, because of my mentors, I knew I could push back. I could stand up to penny pinching producers with the line "How many years have you been a property master?' I would close my talks about never being in a hurry with these words: The first five years are the most dangerous of your career. You do not have the knowledge base to push back, and you are so desperate to stay you will do almost anything. This industry will hand you the ball to department head, even if you are not ready. But make a big mistake, it will crush you. I never once thought about that mistake causing the death of a person on set in my talks. Never be in a hurry to be a Department Head.

As a Detective, some of my largest cases have been solved on the smallest details. One of the most powerful forms of evidence to a case is quality video footage. High quality video footage coupled with proper camera placement can make or break a case. Providing excellent quality video footage captured from an ineffective angle is as devastating to a case as having poor quality video footage. https://lnkd.in/gRtiHmk5

This may be the most polarizing American Faces story yet, due to the background behind my subject. But making a judgment like that, I think, is wholeheartedly wrong. I’m not trying to start anything, or even end something. I just want you to take a few moments and get to know Sam. Sam Smith has been a part of his Northern Minnesota community in one way or another his whole life. He loves his wife and kids and served his country in the Navy and has served people in traumatic times as a first responder. There is compassion in his eyes, and his “protector” spirit is clearly evident as Sam speaks about his life. This family man doesn’t take lightly the ownership of his gunshop called Off Grid Armory in Shevlin, MN near Lake Itasca State Park. The store – literally off the normal grid – offers firearms, ammunition and an amazing array of old military gear and historic guns rivaling many museums. Sam and his staff strive to train people in responsible gun ownership and strategies for self protection, should the need arise. It’s not just about a gun sale. It’s about getting to know his customers, what their specific concerns might be, or how that firearm might serve them in their chosen shooting sport. For Sam, it’s about us all being good to one another, and it starts by him listening to his customer. The classes Sam and his staff teach on site are usually full. His students learn to safely use, care for and handle their firearms – vital responsibilities learned while friendships are forged. If you're still reading, thanks for sticking with this story. If the background of the image caused you to pause, I’m glad you didn’t make a snap judgment and scroll on past. Because if you had, you would have shortchanged yourself, missing out on getting to know a little bit about Sam. Yes, he’s the owner of the Off Grid Armory. He’s also a fellow human being, a man who has served our country, a caregiver and a guardian for his community. Thank you for your service Sam! Photos/Story by: Nielsen Studios Inc. Skift Meetings Interviews Kevin Coffey Regarding Meeting and Event Risk: Something For Meeting Professionals To Think About I presented two weeks ago at the iconic IMEX Las Vegas about the subject of "Addressing Real Risks for Small to Mid-Size Meetings and Events" and was fortunate to have Skift Meetings sit in on my session. I'm glad they did, as the content I shared about the intersection of firearms and related gun violence with meetings and events planners resonated enough that they interviewed me for the article they published today. Unfortunately, meeting and event risk is a topic that many meeting professionals have not fully embraced, and many times don't until the subject personally impacts your meeting or event (or unless your customer asks you to - but that's a topic of another day). Additionally, most of the industry conversations I'm hearing are focusing on the topics of sustainability and DEI. While these are essential topics, the safety and security of a meeting or event, and most importantly, its attendees, needs to take 1st chair. Does it with yours? Do you even consider some of the "what if" topics I discussed in my iMEX session? Firearms and gun violence, as it relates to meetings or events, is an issue that we need to think about, as the topic could include "what ifs" such as: "What if" one of your meeting/event attendees showed up with a concealed firearm? "What if" the attendee was legally authorized for "concealed carry"? "What if" an act of gun violence occurred across the street from where your meeting or event was held?" While we all know that the subject of gun violence at meetings and events is a low-probability but high-risk circumstance, as the Skift article points out, it is something we need to consider at least thinking about, as it's a subject that has impacted our industry in the past, and unfortunately will continue in the future. So what should meeting professionals do if they want to upskill in the area of meeting and event risk - I recommend meeting professionals at least consider taking the Meeting Professionals International Emergency Preparedness Course or at least review some of the valuable content that's made available in this domain that's available for little to no cost (see course link in post comments). While at the risk of sounding cliché......"it's may not a matter of "if" but "when." Andrea Doyle #meetingrisk #mpi #SITE #GBTA #meetings #meetingsandevents
