I recently embarked on a trip to Hamburg to connect with some Ship Management clients (new and old!), as well as meet some candidates I have worked with over the years. As I delved into the maritime industry's heart, two significant observations caught my attention that I think are worth sharing. The Housing Hunt in Hamburg is Impossible. I helped secure a position for an individual there 10 months ago...they STILL do not have somewhere to live permanently. If anyone has a bucket load of money and sense, they would be building housing in Hamburg NOW! I did make this suggestion to a couple of my clients as a potential investment opportunity. Watch this space for the Maritime/Residential fusion you never saw coming... You heard it here first. Secondly... Dry Cargo Superintendents are in High Demand. On a more optimistic note, I discovered a thriving job market in Hamburg for experienced dry cargo superintendents, particularly those with a background as a chief engineer. With the obvious lack of housing someone already living in Hamburg has a huge advantage even if less experienced currently, so if you are a little more junior and already working ashore, do not be shy to apply for positions you may think are a little above where you currently are in your career. The power is in your hands and the ball is firmly in your court with the current market situation. Various companies are actively seeking skilled professionals to join their teams, offering a multitude of options with differing benefits. If you're contemplating a career move or are already based in Hamburg, this could be the opportune moment to explore the diverse opportunities available. Companies are eager to engage with experienced individuals and if you're interested in discussing the pros and cons of different businesses currently hiring, reach out to me. And in my downtime but still very much on brand... I took some time to visit the Haus der Seefahrt, a maritime institution that offered a unique perspective on the industry's history and its impact on seafarers worldwide. As I soaked in the history at Haus der Seefahrt, I couldn't help but appreciate the integral role Hamburg has and continues to play in shaping the maritime industry's future. If you're considering a move or looking to explore job opportunities in the maritime sector, Hamburg is undoubtedly a city worth exploring. Alvedersane...

Superintendents are vital to the maritime industry, they are difficult to find, hard to employ and almost impossible to keep for 3 years +. (It used to be 5!) I have spent 7 years speaking with them every single day. The same 3 things still come up time and time again: 1. Base Salary 2. Package + Allowances (And no I don't mean laptop, a phone and paying for your flight to visit the vessels!) 3. Growth Opportunities Of course, there are other factors like location, vessel types, travelling time etc. But these are the top three across the board. That doesn't mean offering more money than the competition will give you a pick of the litter, but being competitive will increase your available candidate pool. I have seen superintendents moving positions JUST because they were not getting any work-from-home opportunities. 40% of Superintendents said they would not even consider a Job if it did not offer hybrid working. It doesn't mean you need to offer them remote working and pay a 20% pension, but it does mean offering hybrid/flexible working and paying some kind of day rate when travelling will still make you more attractive. You can't guarantee they will be fleet managers when you only have 15 vessels and a fleet manager in place already, but you can add responsibilities over time and set a clear path for progression by having an open discussion about what the options could be in the future. It's not rocket science, it's Shipping. Or don't change anything....... On that note, if you are looking to make a move as Superintendent feel free to reach out anytime...there are opportunities worth talking about out there. #technicalsuperintendent #marineindustry #superintendent #shipmanagement #vesselmanagement

Managing a #yachtrefit can be a time consuming and stressful process, even for the most organised #yachtcaptain. I work closely with Hill Robinson who have extensive technical experience with new builds and refits for the #superyachtsindustry. Planning and managing the refits, including refit contract and negotiaitons. Managing costs and having the budget controlled is an important task and one that can easily run out of hand. Sometimes it is the simple tasks that often require patience, diplomacy and language skills. Our support is an invaluable resource for many owners and captains. We can take on a flexible approach or full time project management, the options are endless. If you are planning a refit, a new build or even in the middle of a refit and need some extra help, please get in touch with me. Let´s talk through how we can assist you and take some weight off those shoulders. #projectmanagement #helpinghand #sailingyacht #motoryacht #shipyards #refit #newbuild #yachts #chiefofficer #technicalsupport #letushelpyou
