Here it is world. Our first Carb-loc Besser Block, Cinder Block to the Americans or Breeze Block to the Brits. It's made from a Rice Straw Biochar mix we've designed, is stronger than a Portland cement concrete block and costs the same to produce. Why is it needed you ask? Each Portland cement concrete block emits over 1KG of CO2, Carb-loc sequesters over 1KG of CO2. For every Carb-loc used you are permanently removing CO2 from our atmosphere and helping to reverse Climate Change. #cdr
Love it! Good question from Kathleen, what about other mechanical, water footprint and proofing, and insulating properties? Rice Straw should be rich in SiO2 isn’t it? (risk husk is I think), if this is so it reminds me to one of the key components of clinker cement which would make a lot of sense. What would be the next use of the block, could it be returned to soil safely? I’ve seen some very beautiful applications of bassalt rock blocks in AZORES, this Farmed Carbon product could be a good inspiration for them and other islandics.
Good work. If someone in the USA has a similar product there maybe potential to gain USDA grant funding to aquire milling or wood product production equipment that can reduce wildfire risk by using non-saw biomass. Such equipment can be adapted wood energy equipment to gain both energy and biochar or other if a wood product is manufactured.
Looking positive. Do we know what the full LCA impacts are including Scope 3, and how it will stand up to variable weather conditions?
Absolutely love this from the perspective of my current career in climate tech … but does it hold up structurally in fire? (my previous career was in fire protection). Biochar is flammable.
This is really interesting, thanks for sharing. Can the blocks be recycled at end of useful life? Can process waste be reused or repurposed?
Nice! What does it weigh when fully dried? Can you cut them more easily? Would love more info!
Is this purely Biochar or a mix of cement and biochar?
Where can I find all the data and technical details for this project, I presume these numbers come from an LCA or otherwise some kind of environmental assessment? Sounds too good to be true, but I hope it is! The next question then is, what are the external constraints to scaling production?
Is it lighter as well as stronger?
